Business Analyst – Data Governance & Microsoft Purview

We are looking for a Business Analyst specialising in Data Governance to help transform how data is owned, understood, controlled and consumed across a global organisation. This role will sit at the intersection of business, data and technology, translating complex data challenges into practical governance processes, clear requirements and measurable improvements.

• Be the Business Analysis Lead for Data Governance: Work across business functions, data teams and technology to uncover data-related challenges, understand business impact and translate requirements into pragmatic governance solutions that improve trust, accessibility and accountability.
• Transform Data Governance into Practical Ways of Working: Define and document how data should be managed across its lifecycle, establishing clear processes for ownership, stewardship, metadata, data quality, issue resolution, classification, access and governance decision-making.
• Drive Business Adoption of Microsoft Purview: Act as a key business-facing contributor to the organisation’s Microsoft Purview journey, shaping requirements and adoption across the catalogue, Data Map, glossary, classifications, collections, lineage and data quality capabilities. Ensure Purview delivers tangible value rather than becoming a purely technical repository.
• Create Clarity from Complex Requirements: Engage stakeholders through discovery sessions and structured analysis, turning ambiguous business needs into well-defined requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, process models and prioritised delivery backlogs that technology teams can execute confidently.
• Establish a Common Data Language: Lead the analysis required to develop and maintain business glossaries, critical data element definitions, data dictionaries, ownership structures and metadata standards, helping different functions establish consistent definitions for the information they rely upon.
• Put Data Quality at the Centre: Investigate data quality challenges using available profiling, reporting and SQL-based analysis. Identify root causes, business impact and ownership, then support the definition of remediation plans, controls, KPIs and ongoing monitoring to drive sustained improvement.
• Bring Stakeholders Together: Facilitate workshops, interviews, walkthroughs and playback sessions involving data owners, data stewards, business SMEs, engineers, architects, analysts, security and compliance teams. Challenge assumptions constructively and drive stakeholders towards clear decisions and agreed outcomes.
• Build an Enterprise Governance Knowledge Base: Own and maintain high-quality governance and analysis artefacts including process maps, data flows, requirements, operating procedures, governance controls, RAID logs, decision records, data dictionaries and stewardship documentation, creating a reliable source of organisational knowledge.
• Embed Governance into Transformation: Partner with Data Engineering, Architecture, Analytics, Security and Compliance teams throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure governance requirements are designed into new platforms, data products and processes. Help identify dependencies, risks and control gaps before they become delivery issues.
• Bring a Modern, Data-Led BA Mindset: Bring strong experience in Business Analysis across data, governance, analytics, compliance or transformation environments, together with practical knowledge of data ownership, stewardship, metadata, lineage, data quality, MDM and regulatory considerations. You should be comfortable working with Microsoft Purview, SQL, Microsoft 365, Azure, Confluence, Jira, and process-modelling tools, and confident using AI-assisted tools responsibly to accelerate analysis, documentation and stakeholder engagement.
