Diagnostic Automotive Technician / Mechanic
Location: Sacramento, CA
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM-5:30 PM
Compensation: $30-$50 per hour, based on experience, diagnostic ability, and production. High-performing diagnostic technicians can realistically target strong six-figure annual earnings.
About the Opportunity
AutoShop Recruiting is partnered with a long-established independent automotive repair shop in Sacramento, CA, to hire a strong Diagnostic Automotive Technician / Mechanic. This is a well-equipped shop with steady workflow, experienced leadership, and a culture built around accountability, training, and doing the job right.
This role is not for a technician who only wants to diagnose and hand the repair away. The right person can find the problem, prove the failure, communicate clearly, and also turn the wrench when the repair needs to be completed.
What You'll Do
As a Diagnostic Technician, you will:
- Diagnose drivability, electrical, check-engine-light, engine performance, and mechanical concerns
- Use modern scan tools, scopes, and testing procedures to verify failures instead of guessing
- Perform repairs after diagnosis, including brakes, steering, suspension, engine-related work, and general mechanical repairs
- Work across domestic and Asian/import vehicles, with limited European work
- Document findings clearly in Tekmetric and communicate with the advisor/team
- Maintain strong productivity while protecting quality and comeback prevention
- Support a team-first shop culture where technicians help each other and keep the workflow moving
What We're Looking For
We are looking for a diagnostic-minded technician who can produce, communicate, and fit into a professional independent-shop environment:
- Proven automotive technician experience, ideally 5+ years
- Strong diagnostic skillset across electrical, drivability, engine performance, and mechanical systems
- Comfortable using scan tools, scopes, wiring diagrams, and a structured testing process
- Willingness to perform both diagnostics and repair work
- Ability to flag roughly 40 hours per week on average when workflow supports it
- Accountable, mature, team-oriented, and able to work without constant oversight
- Valid driver's license
- ASE certifications, L1, smog license, or advanced training are a plus
Shop Environment
- Established independent repair shop serving Sacramento since 1927
- Six two-post lifts, one alignment rack, and one four-post lift
- Snap-on scanner, Autel scanner, PicoScope, and shop willingness to invest in needed equipment
- Tekmetric shop management system
- Strong training and leadership culture
- Focus on profitable, well-managed repair work rather than risky heavy jobs
Compensation & Benefits
- $30-$50 per hour depending on experience and ability
- Team cash bonus tied to billed-hour performance
- Medical, dental, and vision benefits
- Employer pays 80% of medical coverage
- 401(k) with 6% match
- Paid holidays after 90 days
- One week PTO after one year of employment
- Uniforms provided
- Ongoing training and development
