BACKGROUND

The McLendon Leadership Initiative (MLI) is a year-long fellowship program designed to provide real-world experience for individuals pursuing careers in sports. Founded on the core values of John McLendon—Integrity, Education, Leadership, and Mentorship—the program places fellows within collegiate athletic departments and sports organizations nationwide to develop professional skills and industry experience. 


SUMMARY


Reporting directly to the Sr. Assistant Athletic Director for Strength & Conditioning, the Strength & Conditioning Fellow will play a key role in helping the Sports Performance department manage the weight room and execute training protocols for their assigned teams. 


RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Work directly with Howard University’s 2026 NEC Conference Championship Men’s & Women’s Swimming and Dive Program along with 1-2 additional Olympic sports
  • Maintain all weight room facilities and equipment, ensuring a clean, safe, and organized environment
  • Oversee and execute specific sports strength and conditioning programming, while reporting all pertinent information to Associate Strength and Conditioning Coach and Sport Coach
  • Meet regularly with Strength and Conditioning staff to go over programming and UTD research protocols
  • Assist Strength and Conditioning staff with data collection of all student-athletes when necessary
  • Other duties as assigned by Associate Strength and Conditioning Coach


QUALIFICATIONS


  • Bachelor's degree in exercise science, physical education or other appropriate discipline required
  • Prior experience working with strength and conditioning for intercollegiate athletic teams
  • A strong commitment to the Student-Athlete concept and a working knowledge of the NCAA rules and regulations is required
  • Is/remains CPR and first aid certified
  • Working towards obtaining NSCA-CSCS or CSCCa-SCCC Certification
  • Must be able and willing to travel and perform duties away from campus as necessary
  • Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver's license
  • Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record
