Staff Backend Engineer | New York | $220k to $240k + equity
I’m hiring a Staff Backend Engineer for a fast-growing Series B technology company in New York.
This is a proper Staff-level IC role.
You’ll still be writing production code, but the scope goes well beyond your own feature area. They need someone who can take ownership of major backend systems, set architectural direction across teams, make difficult technical decisions and raise the engineering bar around them.
The company is building an AI-powered healthcare platform processing complex data at scale, so there are some genuinely interesting problems across distributed systems, APIs, data processing, cloud infrastructure and GenAI.
You’ll work across areas including:
• Backend architecture and system design
• Large-scale APIs and data processing
• Relational database and data model design
• Distributed and event-driven systems
• AWS/cloud infrastructure
• Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD
• Observability and production reliability
• Technical standards and engineering practices
• AI-assisted development and GenAI applications
Their primary languages are Python and TypeScript, but neither is a hard requirement. They care much more about whether you’ve successfully designed and owned complex backend systems at scale.
The bar is high.
They’re looking for 10+ years in software engineering, at least a year already operating formally at Staff level, strong engineering pedigree from recognised tech/growth companies, startup or scale-up experience, and evidence that you’ve influenced architecture across multiple engineers or teams.
You should be able to clearly explain what you personally designed, what decisions you owned, how you influenced other engineers and what changed in production as a result.
Salary is $220k to $240k base + equity.
This is based in Soho and requires around 3 to 4 days per week in the office. No visa sponsorship is available.
If you’re already operating at Staff level in New York and want significantly more ownership over a growing platform, message me.
