Our client is a nonprofit foundation that focuses on the safest ways to take over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription (Rx) medications. The organization produces original investigative and explanatory journalism on ways to balance the benefits of medications against the potential side effects. The mission is to provide independent, evidence-and science-based information. The nonprofit does not accept any financial support from the pharmaceutical or supplement industries and requires that all staff, consultants, partners and advisors follow the same policy.
ABOUT THE ROLE
In this newly created position, the Senior Director of Development is charged with conceiving, designing, building and executing comprehensive fundraising strategies that support the organization’s mission and growth trajectory. The organization seeks a strategic, creative and results-driven digital fundraiser to drive revenue through coordinated digital fundraising campaigns across digital assets, email, web, and social media. The Senior Director of Development Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this individual will define scalable digital fundraising programs, grow the donor pool, deepen donor engagement, and build a revenue strategy, including a future state with grants and corporate gifts.
The ideal candidate has a track record of designing and executing successful digital fundraising campaigns, knows how to move a variety of audience segments to action, thrives in a start-up environment, enjoys the agility that comes with working smart as a key player within a small team and is energized by the opportunity to innovate, create new systems and process and make a tangible impact. To excel in this role, the candidate must possess a blend of strategic digital marketing know-how, tactical expertise, innovative thinking, and proven donor engagement skills. Proven knowledge of philanthropy, fundraising tactics, and a track record of setting and then meeting/exceeding fundraising targets are essential. This position supervises one staff person.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Growth
- Build the organization’s first comprehensive fundraising and development program, including strategy, systems, and infrastructure, based on best practices.
- Develop and implement a diversified fundraising plan encompassing digital marketing, annual funds, grants and partnerships.
- A/B testing knowledge and facility with data analytic tools to evaluate the success of various CTA outputs.
- Partner with the Executive Director to identify donor growth opportunities and expand philanthropic networks.
- Regularly monitor and evaluate progress toward goals and recommend new fundraising directions as needed based upon analysis of the organization’s donors and giving trends and the broader fundraising landscape.
- Manage departmental budgeting and forecasting with a start-up mindset focused on efficiency and return on investment.
- Participate in strategic planning to create and execute a current year, mid-range and five year view fund development vision to support organization’s plans for growth.
- Assemble presentations explaining strategies, programmatic execution elements and measurement results for various stakeholders.
Fundraising & Donor Engagement
- Lead the creation and execution of digital fundraising including planning and optimization of campaign calendars, content strategy, and performance metrics.
- Leverage technology and digital tools to reach new audiences and optimize donor experience.
- Write and edit compelling, mission-aligned fundraising appeals for email, landing pages, and digital ads.
- Develop segmented and targeted outreach strategies to increase donor acquisition and overall giving.
- Conduct A/B testing and analyze campaign performance to improve open rates, click-throughs, and conversions.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with individual, partner, and foundation donors.
- Collaborate with leadership on high-level donor meetings, proposals, and presentations.
- Experiment with varied approaches to fundraising, such as peer-to-peer fundraising, ambassador programs, and impact storytelling.
- Conduct research, writing, and reporting of grants with a focus on alignment to organizational priorities.
Marketing & Communications Alignment
- Supervise and develop a team member and vendor partner(s) to ensure fundraising and communications strategies are integrated and mutually reinforcing.
- Work with the team to align and affirm consistent definition and deployment of brand positioning, digital presence, and storytelling that strengthens donor engagement and awareness.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 7–10 years of progressive fundraising experience, including individual giving, institutional fundraising, and donor relations.
- Experience in healthcare, disease state, science, health equity, consumer advocacy or a related sector.
- Commitment to organization’s mission.
- Mastery of digital fundraising strategy, tactical planning, execution and data measurement.
- Proven experience creating strategies and plans to maximize online channels like social media, email campaigns, websites, and digital ads to promote a nonprofit's mission, engage supporters, and drive donations and participation.
- Track record of building fundraising infrastructure or launching new fundraising initiatives.
- Proven success in securing and stewarding partnerships and grants.
- Strong leadership and management skills, with experience supervising staff or consultants.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, relationship management, and storytelling abilities.
- Experience vetting, implementing and using donor CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce, Bloomerang, DonorPerfect).
- Comfort operating in a dynamic and growing start-up environment.
- Comfort level with medical and/or scientific research, lexicon, practices.
- CFRE or other fundraising certification is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience are encouraged to apply.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
- Annual salary is $118,000
- Location: NYC or within commutable distance
- This position is remote with willingness/ability to meet/work onsite in NYC, on short notice, as required by the Executive Director which will be variable (e.g., sometimes once a week or once a month as needed), and all commuting costs to the office for meetings will be at the expense of the employee.
