Summary / Primary Role: Yard Hostler

Location Fife , WA

Base Pay $24-$26




The primarily responsible for maintaining the efficient flow of containers to support loading operations at both the dry and reefer docks.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Moves trailers in/out of shipping and receiving doors. 
  • Communicates with the dock regarding moves to ensure accuracy and timeliness. 
  • Performs various yard checks/audits. 
  • Assists in maintaining Inbound and Outbound dock and staging areas.
  • Completes daily equipment inspection reports. 
  • Ensures that all required processes are performed concerning proper paperwork, seals, locking and securing trailers, etc. 
  • Completes other related duties as assigned. Takes the initiative in periods of downtime to complete other duties and remain productive. 
  • Ability to stay focused and organized in periods of varying work volume, moving quickly to execute trailer moves safely and accurately. 
  • Works with a pace that matches the urgency of workflow.  
  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team. 
  • Schedule flexibility to stay late or come in early in accordance with business needs for trailer moves.
  • ALL OTHER DUTIES AND PROJECTS AS ASSIGNED.

Qualifications and Key Skills:

  • High school education; at least one to three years hostler experience. 
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
  • Ability to write simple correspondence. 
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Forklift Certification

Role Overview

Title: Hostler / Yard Tractor Operator

Location: Fife, WA

Base Pay Range: $24–$26/hour (pending HRBPs confirmation; appears aligned for entry-level to mid-level hostler experience)

Schedule: 4x10 schedule — 8:00 AM start, likely Tuesday–Friday (one weekday off; final confirmation TBD)

Status: Full-time (40 hours/week)

Key Responsibilities

  • Move trailers in and out of dock doors (both dry and reefer docks).
  • Communicate with dock staff to ensure timely and accurate trailer movement.
  • Perform daily yard checks, complete equipment inspections, and maintain staging areas.
  • Ensure all processes and paperwork (seals, locks, manifests) are properly completed.
  • Support forklift operations occasionally, though primary focus is yard work.
  • Maintain safety as a top priority and operate with accuracy over speed.

Required / Preferred Experience

  • Prior hostler, yard driver, or switcher experience required (not entry-level).
  • CDL experience (city or line driver) acceptable if the candidate has heavy-equipment operating background.
  • Forklift certification preferred but not required (training can be provided internally).
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must demonstrate safe equipment handling and strong situational awareness.

Team & Environment

  • Current team: 3 hostlers supporting the Fife location.
  • Work is typically solo or in pairs, depending on activity level.
  • Yard pace is moderate and controlled — focus is on precision and safety, not high-speed throughput.
  • Standard automatic yard trucks are used
  • Dock area supports both dry and reefer trailers, but hostlers do not handle temperature-controlled freight directly.

Other Notes

  • Forklift operation may occasionally be required but not part of daily duties.
  • Target: 1 opening to fill within the next 2–3 weeks (goal: initial candidate submissions by end of this week).
