Responsibilities:
- Lead and develop a team of design engineers, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and support.
- Conceptualize, design, and develop plastic components and products based on project requirements, with consideration for functionality, aesthetics, manufacturability, and cost.
- Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of plastic parts and assemblies using CAD software.
- Oversee prototyping activities, including material selection, collaboration with prototype technicians, and validation of designs for fit, form, and function.
- Evaluate and select plastic materials based on performance requirements, environmental conditions, and cost considerations.
- Optimize product designs for efficiency, performance, quality, and cost reduction through analysis, simulation, and testing.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are optimized for production processes, including injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming.
- Partner with quality teams to establish and maintain quality standards for plastic components and products and ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including technical drawings, specifications, and engineering change records.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, manufacturing, quality, and procurement, to meet project objectives and deadlines.
- Research emerging technologies, materials, industry trends, and best practices in plastics and product design.
- Identify and implement innovative solutions to improve product performance, manufacturability, quality, and cost.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing timelines, resources, and deliverables.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 7+ years of experience designing plastic injection-molded products.
- Proven experience leading, mentoring, and developing engineering teams.
- Strong knowledge of plastic component and product design principles.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
- Hands-on injection molding experience preferred.
- Experience with prototyping techniques and rapid design iteration processes.
- Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with strong attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across functional teams.
- Ability to prioritize competing tasks and successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and implement effective engineering solutions.
