We are currently in search of a Director of Development for an American Historical Society. The position is hybrid in Washington, D.C. This is a full-time, permanent position.

 

ORGANIZATION TYPE: American Historical Society  

LOCATION: Washington, D.C. (Hybrid 3 days/week onsite after onboarding)

POSITION TITLE: Director of Development

SCHEDULE: 40 hours/week

DURATION: Permanent

SALARY RANGE: $80,000 - $95,000

With major national celebrations planned for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the new Director of Development will partner with senior leadership to ensure high productivity and quality across the department. This organizational leader will also help execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy to raise between $6-10M annually from individuals, key constituents, and foundations at this pivotal juncture. Help lead at a critical time and contribute to an organization of over 1 million women members dedicated to service, philanthropy, and community leadership. 

 

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • 10+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience required
  • Experience with departments raising approx. $6 million annually, with a team of 5-10 Development staff
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Proven ability to build and manage a Development team, including mentorship and performance evaluations
  • Additional experience with grant writing strongly preferred
  • Highly effective organization, prioritization, multitasking, and follow-up skills, with strong attention to detail required 
  • Ability to travel domestically at least 20% of the time required

 

How You Will Spend Your Day:

  • Monitor overall department operations, identify issues or opportunities that impact production or quality, and recommend strategies for improvement
  • Provide staff with impactful coaching and feedback
  • Lead projects related to building out SOPs for the development department
  • Formulate budgets for department events and initiatives
  • Use data and exceptional analytical abilities to inform and adjust strategy
  • Provide oversight to the department communication plan, including newsletters and reports
  • Help execute a comprehensive fundraising plan that accomplishes annual and long-term financial goals
