We are currently in search of a Controller for a Research Institute. The position is onsite in New York, NY. This is a full-time, temporary opportunity.

LOCATION: New York, NY (Upper West Side)

POSITION TITLE: Controller

SCHEDULE: Full time – M to F - 9am to 5pm – 40 hours weekly

DURATION: Temporary (4 to 6 months)

HOURLY RATE: $36.00 - $38.00

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Controller will be a crucial part of the organization’s financial operations, ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and timeliness of financial reporting. The Controller is responsible for the development and maintenance of all financial systems and fiscal records, including the monthly close, quarterly projections, annual budget process, and annual audit. The Controller is responsible for developing and assuring implementation of accounting policies and procedures to ensure that financial transactions are executed and documented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, the college, and funder requirements.

 

 

Our Ideal Candidate:

·       CPA Required

·       Advanced Excel Skills required

·       Knowledge of nonprofit/higher education accounting and systems preferred

·       10+ years management experience in Senior Accountant or Controller function preferred

·       Previous experience working with Banner or QuickBooks preferred

·        Experience with 990, A-133 and Char 500 reporting standards preferred

·       Accounting control, audit, A/P & A/R, restricted fund and endowment accounting preferred

·       Significant experience with cash management and accounting systems development preferred

How You Will Spend Your Day:

·       Leads all aspects of accounting operations for the organization, including monthly and year-end closing and reporting.

·       Oversee all transactions related to general ledger, receivables, payables, payroll, capital assets, prepaid expenses, and all bank transactions.

·       Maintain books and records of the private foundation that provides the primary source of funding to the organization. 

·       Files all necessary reports.

·       Develops a standard monthly reporting package for the COO and a five-year financial plan. This includes supporting schedules to analyze budget vs. actual variances for the current month and year-to-date and cash flow.

·       Provide Academic Program staff with tools to report tuition payments, scholarships, fellowships, and stipends to the College.

·       Provide the development department with monthly reports to maximize the use of restricted funding.

·       Maintain appropriate records of all restricted funds and ensure that all restricted funds are expended appropriately.

·       Modernizes financial systems and processes to minimize manual data entry.

·       Analyzes the organization’s financial position, comparing it to the budget, investigating variances, updating forecasts, and making recommendations to both the COO and executive management throughout the year to ensure optimal financial performance.

·       Works closely with the COO and department heads to make timely adjustments to the budget as dictated by changes in funding, staffing, expense planning, or other unplanned activity.

·       Communicates financial information to department heads and their staff so that they have the financial information they need to effectively manage their projects.

·       Responsible for cash management activities, including the review of invoices and ensuring that products and services revenue figures are accurate.

·       Supervises finance staff. Providing oversight, coaching, and development for finance staff.

·       Maintains records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and funder requirements.

·       Ensures that all financial reports required by funders are completed, accurate, and submitted on time.

·       Coordinates special projects as directed by the Chief Operating Officer; performs other related duties as assigned.
