We are currently in search of a Director of Human Resources for a Social Justice Organization located in New York City (Midtown Manhattan). This is a Full-Time (40 hrs./wk.), Hybrid, Ongoing Temporary assignment.

POSITION TITLE: Director of Human Resources

SCHEDULE: Full-Time (40 hrs./wk.), Hybrid

DURATION: Temporary (ongoing)

PAY RATE $42- $45/hr. DOE


Position Summary: The Director of Human Resources will provide strategic leadership and hands-on management of people operations, fostering an inclusive, supportive, and high-performing work environment. This role oversees the full spectrum of HR functions—including recruitment, staff development, professional development, employee relations, and PEO (Professional Employer Organization) management. The HR Director will also administer and oversee operations for our NYC office and works in partnership with the Director of Operations and Special Events.


Our Ideal Candidate:


  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive HR experience, including at least 3 years in a senior HR leadership role
  • Experience managing or working closely with a PEO, strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial, social, and economic justice
  • Strong knowledge of HR best practices, labor law, and compliance (NYC/NYS preferred)
  • Proven track record in equitable recruitment, staff development, and organizational culture work
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Experience supporting office operations and administration in a nonprofit or justice-aligned organization a plus
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, creativity, curiosity, and a good sense of humor is essential 


How You Will Spend Your Day:


Human Resources Leadership


  • Design, implement, and continuously improve HR policies and practices that reflect our justice and equity values
  • Serve as the primary liaison with our PEO partner, ensuring effective management of payroll, benefits, compliance, and HRIS systems
  • Lead equitable recruitment and hiring processes to attract, hire, and retain diverse, mission-aligned talent
  • Develop and manage onboarding and offboarding processes that center employee experience and organizational values

 

Professional Development & Staff Support


  • Design and implement professional development strategies that support growth, learning, and retention
  • Collaborate with managers to provide coaching, training, and performance management guidance
  • Foster a culture of feedback, continuous learning, and accountability


Operations & Administration


  • Oversee administration and daily operations of the NYC office, ensuring a safe, functional, and welcoming workplace
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and organizational policies
  • Manage state compliance registrations and filings
  • Manage and administer payroll for all full-time, part-time and temporary staff
  • Develop and manage HR-related budgets in partnership with the COO

 

Organizational Support


  • Serve as a thought partner and strategic advisor to the COO on organizational culture, staffing, and operations
  • Support initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, well-being, and organizational effectiveness.
  • Manage and coordinate culture building and wellness activities for all staff, remote and in-person including field day and staff retreats in partnership with the Director of Operations and Special Events
