SALARY RANGE: $80,000 - $90,000

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
The Volunteer Engagement Director is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive volunteer engagement strategy to strengthen relationships with volunteers and enhance their contributions to the organization. This position will oversee volunteer recruitment, training, appreciation programs, event planning, community building, and team management. Reporting to the Vice President, Host Family Experience & Stakeholder Engagement, the Director will collaborate closely with several departments to ensure that volunteers are effectively integrated and their impact is maximized.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Direction
· Develop and implement a strategic volunteer engagement plan that aligns with the organization’s mission, goals, and objectives.
· Identify key areas for volunteer involvement and ensure that volunteer roles are impactful and fulfilling
· Monitor trends in volunteerism and recommend best practices to optimize volunteer recruitment and retention efforts.
· Set and track performance metrics for volunteer engagement, providing regular reports to senior leadership.
Volunteer Recruitment and Retention
· Lead recruitment to attract and onboard new volunteers through outreach, partnerships, and engagement.
· Design and implement a volunteer onboarding process that ensures volunteers are adequately informed, trained, and integrated into the organization’s culture.
· Develop strategies for retaining volunteers, including recognition and engagement initiatives.
Training and Development
· Oversee the design and delivery of training programs to ensure that volunteers are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.
· Provide volunteers with ongoing support and professional development opportunities, fostering a sense of community and personal growth.
· Monitor volunteer satisfaction and work with key stakeholders to address concerns and improve volunteer experiences.
Volunteer Appreciation
· Develop and implement a comprehensive volunteer appreciation program, recognizing volunteers for their contributions through events, communications, and personalized recognition efforts.
· Regularly communicate with volunteers to ensure they feel valued and engaged with AFS-USA.
Event Planning
· Participate in the planning, coordinating, and executing volunteer-involved events, including National and Community Summits, community outreach programs, and internal activities.
· Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to promote events and engage the wider community.
Team Management
· Supervise and lead a team of 3 staff members dedicated to volunteering and hosting family engagement, providing mentorship, guidance, and performance evaluations.
· Establish clear goals and expectations for team members, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and high-quality service delivery.
· Foster a collaborative and positive work environment that promotes team growth, accountability, and professional development.
· Conduct regular team meetings to review progress, share best practices, and resolve any challenges.
· Ensure adequate staffing and resources to meet the needs of volunteers and host families.
Community Building
· Collaborate with National Council leadership to create a positive environment where volunteers can share their experiences, feedback, and ideas.
· Develop and implement a strategy for creating and growing volunteer communities such as chapters or teams, ensuring they align with the organization’s goals, values, and mission.
· Build and maintain relationships with community partners, organizations, and stakeholders to expand volunteer opportunities.
REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
· Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, communications, social work, or related field.
· At least 5 years of experience in a leadership role in volunteer management or community engagement.
· Experience in developing and managing volunteer recognition programs.
· CVA credential (Certification in Volunteer Administration) a plus.
· Will require travel up to 25% travel for AFS conferences, meetings, and volunteer events, typically one long weekend per month.
Critical Skills and Qualities
· Proven experience in volunteer management, team leadership, or community outreach.
· Ability to connect with and inspire volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds.
· Understanding of volunteer psychology, with resourceful strategies for recruitment and appreciation.
· Experience analyzing and creating plans for individual chapters, each with its unique culture, challenges and potential.
· Love of coaching and mentoring; experience with Training-the-Trainer.
· Strong organizational and event planning skills, including parlor events that create new ambassadors.
· Experience with volunteer management software or CRM systems.
· Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
