Benefits: Healthcare stipend and PTO

Location and Schedule: Hybrid in Detroit, MI

About iCare Foundation

iCare Foundation supports Learning Care employees facing qualifying hardships and unexpected life events. Through its grant programs, the foundation helps provide stability for the people who care for children. Its work is sustained by employee giving, fundraising events, and the commitment of Learning Care employees who volunteer as board and committee members.

The opportunity

The Executive Director will lead the foundation’s next stage of growth, expanding financial support and strengthening the systems that deliver assistance to employees. Reporting to the Vice President of iCare Foundation and partnering with the Board of Directors, this leader will refresh the strategic plan, increase participation in the iCare Champions employee giving program, and develop new sources of revenue.

This full-time, hands-on role is the foundation’s sole regular staff position, supported by volunteer committees and Learning Care finance expertise. The Executive Director will work independently to advance strategic priorities and manage daily operations.

Local presence in the Metro Detroit area is required, with regular availability to build relationships with Learning Care leadership and attend key fundraising events.

Key responsibilities

  • Fundraising and employee engagement
  • Develop and execute a fundraising plan with clear goals and timelines, strengthening current revenue sources and identifying new opportunities.
  • Grow enrollment and sustained participation in iCare Champions. Identify barriers to participation, strengthen communications about the impact of giving, and engage corporate employees while recognizing the financial circumstances of school employees.
  • Cultivate and steward donors, sponsors, and Learning Care vendor relationships. Evaluate opportunities for major gifts, corporate partnerships, grants, and smaller donor cultivation events.
  • Lead the annual Golf Invitational, virtual 5K, and other fundraising activities, overseeing sponsorships, volunteers, vendors, logistics, and financial results.

Strategic leadership and board partnership

  • Lead an update of the strategic plan with the board, translating priorities into annual work plans, budgets, and measurable objectives.
  •  Keep the Vice President and board informed through organized, proactive communication about fundraising, finances, grant activity, and progress against goals. Identify decisions needed and recommend solutions.
  • Coordinate board-led volunteer committees through clear responsibilities, deadlines, and consistent follow-up, recognizing members’ Learning Care commitments.
  • Serve as a visible, accessible ambassador for iCare. Build relationships with Learning Care executives and employees, increase awareness of the foundation, and align activities with relevant company initiatives.

Grant programs and daily operations

  • Provide active leadership and hands-on support for the volunteer applications team, helping ensure timely, consistent, and compassionate responses to employee requests.
  • Improve application workflows, documentation, and communications. Identify opportunities for automation and resource referrals that improve service and reduce the administrative burden on volunteers.
  • Monitor application volume, grant activity, turnaround times, and employee needs. Recommend program improvements and opportunities to expand assistance as resources permit.
  • Manage daily administration and coordinate volunteer and approved temporary support.

Financial stewardship and governance

  • Partner with the finance committee on budgeting, financial reporting, cash management, expense controls, and responsible stewardship of foundation resources.
  • Support the annual audit and required tax and regulatory filings, working with finance volunteers and professional advisers on compliance obligations across the states in which the foundation operates.
  • Maintain appropriate records and support sound governance, including review of bylaws, policies, and board and committee processes.

Measures of Success

Working with the Vice President and Board of Directors, the Executive Director will establish annual priorities and track progress toward the following outcomes:

  • Fundraising growth: Meet or exceed the approved fundraising goal for the annual Golf Invitational, grow contributed revenue by 5–10% annually, and maintain donor retention of at least 70%.
  • Expanded giving opportunities: Develop additional fundraising opportunities throughout the year and increase participation in the iCare Champions program by at least 10% annually.
  • Program impact: Achieve at least 90% of agreed annual program objectives and demonstrate the foundation’s impact through clear reporting on assistance provided and employee needs addressed.
  • Board engagement: Strengthen board attendance and participation in committees, events, and advocacy for the foundation.
  • Community partnerships: Establish or expand three to five meaningful community partnerships annually to strengthen the foundation’s reach and support.
  • Strategic execution: Achieve at least 90% of agreed annual strategic milestones.
  • Financial stewardship and compliance: Manage operations within the approved budget, communicate variances promptly, and ensure timely completion of all required filings, audits, and governance obligations.

Qualifications and leadership qualities

  • At least seven years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit, foundation, education, healthcare, or community-based organizations, with a strong preference for prior nonprofit Executive Director experience.
  • Demonstrated success growing fundraising revenue, cultivating donors, and managing fundraising events; ability to assess and develop additional revenue opportunities.
  • Experience leading strategic planning, partnering with a board, and mobilizing volunteers through clear expectations and consistent follow-through.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting and the ability to work with professional advisers on financial reporting, nonprofit compliance, and annual audits.
  • A confident, proactive relationship builder who communicates comfortably with senior executives and donors. Driven and persistent, with the judgment, humility, and warmth to work collaboratively.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills, sound judgment with sensitive employee information, and the willingness to handle operational details independently.
  • Genuine enjoyment of small teams, versatility, hands-on approach.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. Commitment to the mission is essential; experience in child care or education is helpful.
