We are currently in search of an Interim Executive Director for a Reconstructionist Synagogue. The position is Hybrid in Bethesda, MD. This is a part-time, temporary position.

LOCATION: Bethesda, MD (hybrid)

POSITION TITLE: Interim Executive Director

SCHEDULE: 24-32 hours/week (3-4 days)

DURATION: Temporary

HOURLY RATE: $55.00 - $60.00

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall day-to-day management of its administrative and financial affairs, including supervisory responsibility for administrative, program, building maintenance, security, and outsourced contracted personnel. As the chief administrative employee, the Executive Director will work closely with the Lead Rabbi, other clergy, Board of Directors, vendors, volunteers/volunteer committees, and congregants to provide a harmonious balance and effective synagogue operation.

 

 

Our Ideal Candidate:

·       5+ years of senior nonprofit leadership, ideally with experience stepping into interim or transitional roles.

·       Steady, emotionally intelligent leader able to navigate sensitive situations and maintain organizational calm.

·       Strong relationship‑builder who can engage comfortably with congregants, clergy, volunteers, and staff.

·       Experienced in board partnership, including working closely with a Board President and supporting governance needs.

·       Operational manager skilled in overseeing finance, HR, facilities, security, and administrative functions.

·       Reliable, process‑oriented professional who can maintain systems, ensure continuity, and keep operations flowing during transition.

·       Ability to be on-site on select Saturdays.

 

How You Will Spend Your Day:

·       Overseeing the synagogue’s daily operations, ensuring smooth functioning across administration, programs, facilities, and security.

·       Serving as the primary administrative partner to the Lead Rabbi, clergy, Board President, and volunteer committees.

·       Managing membership needs; responding to inquiries, supporting retention, maintaining records, and fostering a welcoming community experience.

·       Monitoring the synagogue’s finances in partnership with the Treasurer and Finance Committee, including payroll, AP/AR, purchasing, and financial reporting.

·       Supervising administrative, building, and clerical staff, and coordinating with outsourced vendors and contractors.

·       Maintaining personnel systems, job descriptions, benefits administration, and compliance with employment best practices.

·       Ensuring all operational systems run effectively, including membership databases, fiscal reporting, and program logistics.

·       Support governance by preparing Board materials, attending Executive Committee and Board meetings, and maintaining bylaws, policies, and minutes.

·       Overseeing building and cybersecurity measures while balancing safety with a welcoming environment.

·       Collaborating with program and communications staff to support events, holiday programming, and community engagement activities.
