Careers In Nonprofits has been retained by the Helen Gurley Brown Foundation to lead its search for a Senior Community Engagement Manager. The position is Hybrid in New York City.

 

ORGANIZATION: Helen Gurley Brown Foundation

LOCATION: New York City (Columbus Circle)

POSITION TITLE: Senior Community Engagement Manager

SCHEDULE: M-F 9am-5pm or 10am-6pm (M-W in-office) with some travel required

DURATION: Permanent

ANNUAL SALARY: $110,000 - $140,000

The Foundation operates across three major program areas including: Empowering Youth, Empowering Women and Empowering Innovation.


 The Foundation seeks a dynamic, relationship-driven professional to lead alumni engagement efforts, support the development of new grant initiatives and partnerships, and provide operational / event coordination and support. This role sits at the intersection of program strategy, participant support, external relations, and operations, with a strong emphasis on long-term impact beyond program completion.


The position is responsible for sustaining meaningful relationships with alumni and former grantees, exploring and operationalizing new grant ideas, and ensuring participants and alumni are supported as they pursue post-secondary and career pathways. This role also contributes to communications, events, and public-facing activities that strengthen the Foundation’s visibility and community presence.

 

Our Ideal Candidate:

·       5+ years of experience in program management, alumni engagement, student services, grantmaking or a related nonprofit or philanthropic role

·       Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, education, social sciences, communications or other similar degree required, or additional experience in lieu of a degree

·       Strong relationship-building skills and comfort engaging with diverse stakeholders over long time horizons

·       Experience researching, launching or managing programs or initiatives

·       Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·       Comfort working across teams and contributing to both strategic planning and hands-on execution

·       Familiarity with NYC-based nonprofit, education or workforce ecosystems is a plus

 

How You Will Spend Your Day:

 

 Alumni Engagement & Long-Term Relationships

● Design and manage alumni engagement strategies across all Foundation programs, with a focus on maintaining long-term relationships and continued participation.

● Serve as a primary point of contact for alumni and former grantees, maintaining regular communication and follow-up.

● Develop systems and touchpoints to track alumni outcomes, engagement, and ongoing needs.

● Identify opportunities to re-engage alumni through mentorship, speaking opportunities, networking, and program participation.

● Collaborate with program and operations teams to ensure alumni insights inform future program design and grantmaking.

 

Research & Development of New Grant Initiatives

● Research, explore, and vet potential new grant ideas aligned with the Foundation’s mission and strategic priorities.

● Assess feasibility, impact potential, operational requirements, and resourcing needs for new grant concepts.

● Support the development of grant structures, timelines, and implementation plans for approved initiatives.

● Build and manage relationships with prospective grantees, partners, and field experts.

● Monitor early-stage grants and pilot programs to inform refinement and long-term sustainability.

 

Events, Media, and External Engagement

● Oversee and support the planning and execution of Foundation events, including the annual retreat, grant pitch competitions, program showcases, networking events, and industry-relevant convenings.

● Oversee media, communications, and public relations efforts, including content development, storytelling, and management of other HGB staff, external partners or consultants.

● Represent the Foundation at relevant external events and convenings to strengthen relationships and visibility.

● Ensure alumni, participants, and partners are meaningfully integrated into events and public-facing activities.

 

 

Operations & Cross-Functional Support

● Collaborate with internal teams to align alumni engagement, program development, and post-secondary support efforts with Foundation operations.

● Maintain accurate records and documentation related to alumni, grants, and participant services.

● Support data collection and reporting efforts related to engagement, outcomes, and program performance.

● Provide additional operational and programmatic support as assigned.
