Due to continued growth and increasing project volume, they are seeking a hands-on, strategic Controller to oversee the accounting function and serve as a financial partner to ownership and operations leadership. This individual will play a critical role in strengthening reporting, managing project-based financials, and ensuring the organization is positioned for continued scalability.

Position Overview


The Controller will oversee all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance for a project-driven construction organization. This role will partner closely with ownership, project managers, and operations leadership to ensure accurate job costing, cash flow forecasting, and financial planning.

This is a highly visible leadership role requiring both technical accounting expertise and strong business acumen.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes
  • Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
  • Present financial performance insights to ownership

Construction & Job Cost Accounting

  • Oversee job costing, WIP schedules, and percent-complete accounting
  • Monitor project budgets vs. actuals and analyze variances
  • Review and approve billing, retainage tracking, and revenue recognition
  • Ensure accurate cost allocations and project profitability analysis
  • Support project managers with financial reporting tools

Cash Flow & Forecasting

  • Manage company cash flow and liquidity planning
  • Oversee AR, AP, and billing processes
  • Monitor bonding capacity and banking relationships
  • Assist in forecasting backlog and pipeline performance

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and construction accounting standards
  • Oversee audit preparation and tax coordination
  • Manage insurance, bonding, and regulatory reporting requirements
  • Maintain strong internal controls and risk mitigation processes

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and mentor accounting staff
  • Improve processes and implement efficiencies
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations and executive leadership


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • CPA preferred but not required
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • 3+ years in a leadership role
  • Construction industry experience required
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Job costing
  • WIP schedules
  • Percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Retainage and billing structures
  • Project-based financial forecasting
  • Experience with construction ERP/accounting systems preferred
  • Strong Excel and financial modeling skills
