Director of Laboratory

Position Summary

The Director of Laboratory provides administrative, fiscal, and technical leadership for the clinical laboratory. This role ensures efficient operations, high-quality testing services, and compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, including College of American Pathologists (CAP), AABB, The Joint Commission, and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).

The Director oversees quality assurance, quality control, and point-of-care testing programs, while managing laboratory personnel, budgeting, workflow, and strategic planning. The position collaborates with organizational leadership to support operational goals and patient care excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead daily laboratory operations and ensure regulatory compliance
• Manage hiring, staff development, performance evaluations, and payroll
• Oversee quality improvement and accreditation activities
• Develop departmental goals, policies, and performance metrics
• Manage budgets, capital equipment planning, and inventory control
• Maintain productivity standards and optimize staffing based on workload
• Stay current with advancements in laboratory medicine

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field required (or 7+ years of direct experience in lieu of degree)
• Master’s degree preferred
• 3–5 years of related experience required
• 3–5 years of leadership experience preferred
• MLS (ASCP, AAB, CLS, or equivalent) certification required
