Director of Med/Surg – Acute Care
Position Summary:
The Director of Med/Surg is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of a 42-bed adult medical-surgical unit. This leader ensures the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective care through efficient resource management, staff development, and collaboration across clinical and administrative teams. The role supports organizational goals focused on clinical excellence, patient experience, regulatory compliance, and financial sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day operational leadership, overseeing patient care, staff performance, and department outcomes.
- Guide the department through continuous quality improvement initiatives, resource optimization, and staff engagement.
- Develop and implement strategies to ensure a seamless patient care experience across the continuum.
- Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to improve clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and professional growth.
- Lead hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and corrective actions in compliance with HR policies and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) standards.
- Monitor departmental budgets and support cost containment efforts.
- Coordinate educational initiatives for both staff and patients, supporting continued professional development.
- Contribute to technology and service line advancements by evaluating innovations and best practices.
- Participate in facility-wide planning efforts, including short- and long-term goal setting.
- Represent the unit in organizational committees and initiatives as needed.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2–3 years of recent acute care experience at the manager level, preferably in adult inpatient settings.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.
- Active RN license or APRN license in good standing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or instructor certification) required within 30 days of hire.
Unit Overview:
- 42-bed medical-surgical unit with a wide range of adult patients.
- Oversight of approximately 57 FTEs, including clinical leaders, RNs, LPNs, and patient care techs.
- Recently renovated with upgraded equipment and facilities.
- Highly engaged team with opportunities for mentorship and development.
- Staffing in progress, with open roles for new grad RNs, LPNs, and PCTs.
- Reports to an Associate Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Nursing Officer, with strong pathways for career advancement.
- Part of a larger healthcare campus with specialty services including emergency care, women’s and children’s health, advanced stroke and cardiac care, and surgical services.
