Registered Nurse – Intermediate Care (Cardiac Stepdown)
Compensation: $32 to $47 per hour depending on experience
Position Overview
The Intermediate Care (IMC) / Cardiac Stepdown RN provides specialized care for patients requiring close cardiac monitoring who are not in critical condition but need more observation than a general med-surg floor provides. Patients may include those recovering from myocardial infarction, post-cardiac surgery, heart failure, arrhythmias, and other cardiovascular conditions. Using the nursing process, you will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and positive outcomes.
Minimum Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (required; BSN preferred)
Experience
- Entry-level applicants welcome
- Experience in telemetry, stepdown, or critical care preferred
Licenses / Certifications
- Active RN license in Wisconsin and/or Illinois (based on assignment)
- Current BLS certification (required, or ability to obtain within 6 weeks of hire)
- ACLS certification strongly preferred (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of cardiac monitoring and arrhythmia recognition
- Ability to manage patients on cardiac drips, oxygen therapy, and post-procedure recovery
- Rapid response and escalation skills in emergent situations
- Excellent communication and teamwork with physicians, advanced practice providers, and respiratory therapy
- Compassionate, patient-focused approach with strong teaching skills for patients and families
Key Responsibilities
- Provide continuous monitoring and care to patients on cardiac stepdown, including rhythm interpretation and early detection of deterioration
- Administer medications, IV drips, and treatments safely and accurately
- Respond promptly to emergencies and initiate appropriate interventions
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to manage complex cardiac conditions
- Educate patients and families on recovery, lifestyle modifications, and discharge instructions
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized patient care areas
- Support orientation and mentorship of new nurses and nursing students
