Lead Operating Engineer

Job Type: Full-Time

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM – 2:30 PM

Department: Plant Operations / Facilities

Salary: $58 to $61 per hour


Position Summary

The Lead Operating Engineer is responsible for supervising the maintenance and operation of all air conditioning equipment and related systems. This includes performing inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation. This position works independently with minimal supervision.


Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, inspect, test, and repair HVAC systems and related components in compliance with local, state, and federal codes, as well as applicable safety and health regulations.
  • Supervise and guide operating engineers and trades personnel.
  • Operate and maintain all air conditioning systems and equipment, including DX and centrifugal units.
  • Maintain and treat cooling tower systems.
  • Clean and replace air filters, condensing coils, cooling coils, and fan coil units as required.
  • Adjust and replace pneumatic and electric controls, motors, and air compressors.
  • Maintain fans, dampers, and ventilation systems.
  • Perform regular inspections, maintain detailed logs, and ensure all HVAC units are operating properly.
  • Complete mechanical maintenance and repair work as assigned.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal when necessary.
  • Attend departmental meetings and perform other duties as assigned.


Education & Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Air Conditioning Refrigeration Operator’s License (City of White Plains or equivalent jurisdiction).
  • Minimum of 9 years of HVAC and refrigeration experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Universal refrigerant transition and recovery certification.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to lift and transport objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, bending, climbing ladders, and operating tools or machinery.
  • Capable of visual and auditory inspections to detect operational issues.
  • Must be able to work in noisy environments and all weather conditions, including snow and ice removal.
  • May be exposed to cleaning agents and other chemicals used in maintenance operations (safety data available).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical instructions.
  • Must be able to focus and concentrate for extended periods and maintain composure in high-stress situations.
