About the Job: The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for developing mechanical designs, utilizing mechanical design principles, applicable industry standards, and company design practices. The successful candidate will be able to produce technically accurate designs within schedule and budget requirements. Relevant experience in energy systems or heavy industrial equipment is preferred.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Interprets industry standards governing product design.
  • Develop and design accurate prints and mechanical documentation for manufacturing and assembly of customized products in reference to electrical design and customer specification.
  • Generate and/or coordinate the Bills of Material for all material and accessories needed in a design including standard electrical accessories.
  • Generate material purchase requests as required for material that is not stocked or advance-ordered.
  • Review and check designs and outlines produced by other designers, including nameplates and simple schematics for conformance to customer and industry specifications and standards.
  • Use appropriate computer programs or write programs as required to analyze data for designs.
  • Use CAD system for producing outlines and design concepts for product improvement or new products as appropriate. Produce accurate detailed design drawings.
  • Develop engineering, material and shop standards.
  • Investigate shop problems and correct design packages as required. Revise design practices to prevent recurring problems. Do initial investigation of shop electrical problems and recommend solutions.
  • Handle special projects as assigned by investigation, analysis, design, or other appropriate means to produce needed results.
  • Work closely with the Engineering Manager, Project Managers and other designers to provide cost effective, technically sufficient and timely designs.
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of technical drawings, specifications, documents, instructions and reports.
  • Supports continuous improvement of the design process inclusive of tools such as computer-assisted engineering, design software and training.
  • Provides input for strategic development projects to improve transformer design, application and manufacturing process.
  • Execute the mechanical component design, steel frame structure design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to review and perform linear structural stress analysis and specify materials and finite element analysis boundary conditions.
  • Participate in implementation of New Product Introductions Design, prototype, validate, and perform test activities and release products for use in Oil & Gas applications.
  • Lead or participate in internal design reviews of new products or features. Make suggestions and provide supporting detail for new design development initiatives.
  • Address shop floor and field quality issues and take necessary design measures through ECN to enhance product quality and/or reduce manufacturing and material cost.
  • Work with quality and manufacturing teams to resolve field or shop floor issues and questions.



Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline
  • Position open to new college graduates, and those with 1-year of experience
  • Preferred to have knowledge of applicable codes and standards including ANSI, IEEE, NEC, CSA and others
  • Knowledge and experience with AutoCAD and 3-D modeling software
  • Experience in use of AutoCAD, Inventor, MRP tools; working knowledge and skill with Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
  • Creative thinker, strong analytical skills, detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with attention to detail
  • Local or regional candidates preferred


Compensation: $65,000-$80,000

Job Status: Direct hire, onsite in Buffalo, NY
