GENERAL SUMMARY
The Regional Health & Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the comprehensive safety strategies within their designated region and supporting the enterprise Safety Management System across all company business units in collaboration with peer groups and stakeholders. This role focuses on cultivating a culture of safety excellence, guidance, coaching, and risk reduction through continuous improvement, visible leadership, and sound tactical and strategic decision making.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)
· Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, occupational health, engineering, construction, or a similar related field. Equivalent and demonstrated experience in the mining, construction, heavy civil, or manufacturing industries will also be considered
· Background and understanding of applicable regulatory environments including: MSHA, OSHA, DOT, BATFE, FRA
· Demonstration of progressive responsibility including tactical and strategic focused positions and leadership roles
· Strong understanding of behavior-based safety principles and safety management systems
· Demonstrated background leading and influencing cross functional teams to develop and implement systems and processes that reduce risk while still maintaining operational effectiveness
· Confident, articulate, and charismatic leader able to coach and influence change through respectfully challenging historic practices
· Excellent technical skills to design systems and process to support the company safety journey, analyze leading and lagging data to oversee program effectiveness
· Ability to work both independently and interdependently across simultaneous projects or tasks with the ability to prioritize and execute
· True safety leader who believes in the commitment to zero harm and creating a culture of safety in line with company values
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (preferred requirements i.e. certifications, software use, etc.)
· Prior experience in the mining, construction, or heavy civil industries
· Strong working knowledge of computer systems, word processing, data analytics, presentations, and similar functions
· Certification in applicable safety related field: CSP, CMSP, CIH, etc.
· Effective analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions based on facts and assessed risk
· Prior experience developing and delivering, or overseeing an enterprise Safety Management System
· Knowledge of Occupational Health & Hygiene programs and requirements
· Past experience managing department budgets and capital projects
· Experience with risk compliance, insurance, and workers compensation including managing and overseeing cases and claims
DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES
· Partner with operational leadership both within the region of responsibility and across the company to support the alignment of safety principles, functions, and systems
· Leads, mentors, and coaches safety professionals within the region of responsibility including: team effectiveness, optimal deployment, skills development, and project completion
· Overall responsibility for overseeing and influencing the Safety Management System, its components and effectiveness
· Acts as the subject matter expert for H&S and regulatory issues, provides guidance and support to local teams
· Assists with due diligence for acquisitions by reviewing, inspecting, and evaluating past performance, systems, and infrastructure
· Coaches and mentors safety team to support leadership and organizational succession planning
· Frequently conducts site audits, inspections, and team member interactions
· Oversees or supports matters related to worker's compensation, auto liability, and general liability claims
· Supports and oversees incident investigations and ensures thorough and timely completion
· Frequently liaise with local, State, and Federal inspectors during inspection activities and manage any issued warnings or citations
· Update and be knowledgeable of regional and company safety statistics and trends, and use available analytics to modify and increase the value of safety and compliance initiatives
· Support the development, implementation, and oversite of regional safety programs including policies, procedures, risk assessment, audits, training, and other H&S technical operations
· Communicate routinely and effectively with key stakeholders and leadership regarding challenges, successes, opportunities, and threats related to health and safety goals
· Keep abreast of agency rulemaking that may impact company operations
