Overview
A well-established, privately held organization with multiple operating businesses is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role overseeing the day-to-day accounting function while partnering closely with ownership to support continued growth, improve financial processes, and provide strategic financial guidance.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, experience leading an accounting team, and the ability to balance day-to-day execution with long-term financial planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct all accounting operations, including the month-end and year-end close process.
- Lead and develop the accounting team responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and general ledger activities.
- Prepare and review accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Develop annual budgets, financial forecasts, and cash flow projections while monitoring performance against expectations.
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations to leadership on profitability, operational improvements, and strategic initiatives.
- Support capital planning, pricing analysis, and financial modeling for business decisions.
- Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors and tax advisors.
- Oversee corporate tax compliance and ensure timely filing of required federal, state, and local tax obligations.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, reporting, and the use of financial systems across the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- Construction industry needed
- Eight or more years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Experience managing the accounting function within a multi-entity or operationally complex business.
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and corporate tax matters.
- Experience with project-based or job cost accounting is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of work-in-progress (WIP) accounting and cost accounting methodologies is a plus.
- Proficiency with accounting software, QuickBooks or similar ERP/accounting systems, and Microsoft Excel.
- Comfortable working with technology, system integrations, and data imports/exports.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
