Senior Accountant

Fairfield County

Hybrid

Industry: Consumer Manufacturing/Retail

An established global consumer products company is seeking a Senior Accountant to take ownership of revenue-related accounting, with a focus on gross-to-net accruals, customer programs, reserves, and revenue recognition.

This opportunity offers exposure to commercial operations and collaboration across Accounting, FP&A, Sales, Credit, Customer Service, and Supply Chain. The ideal candidate enjoys analyzing complex data, improving processes, and translating findings into useful business insights.

You do not need to have Revenue Recognition experience. For strong foundational corporate accountants looking to expand into this area, leadership is willing to train up.

Key Responsibilities

Revenue Recognition and Gross-to-Net Accounting

  • Prepare monthly accruals for customer incentives, promotional allowances, co-op advertising, returns, defective product allowances, shortages, and penalties.
  • Analyze customer claims and deductions against accruals and recommend reserve adjustments.
  • Maintain reserve methodologies and assumptions, using historical activity and business trends to evaluate accuracy.
  • Apply ASC 606 to customer contracts, rebates, incentives, and promotional arrangements.
  • Assess the accounting implications of new commercial programs and identify emerging risks.

Financial Close and Reconciliations

  • Prepare journal entries and supporting documentation for monthly, quarterly, and annual closes.
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations for assigned revenue accounts.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciling items within established deadlines.
  • Maintain clear documentation supporting accounting conclusions and management review.

Analysis and Business Partnership

  • Develop reporting on reserve balances, customer deductions, and program performance.
  • Partner with Credit and Deductions teams to monitor aging, identify recovery opportunities, and ensure appropriate accounting classification.
  • Work with FP&A on forecasts and budgets for returns, deductions, trade spend, and reserve requirements.
  • Communicate key trends, financial exposures, and recommendations to management.

Controls and Process Improvement

  • Execute revenue accounting controls and support SOX compliance.
  • Prepare schedules and documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Improve reconciliation, reserve review, and reporting processes through automation and standardization.
  • Participate in ERP and reporting enhancements, including SAP-related initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3–5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP; experience applying ASC 606 is particularly relevant but not a must-have.
  • Revenue accounting, gross-to-net, customer deductions, or trade spend experience preferred.
  • Consumer products, retail, wholesale, or distribution experience strongly preferred.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP, and large-data analysis.
  • SAP experience strongly preferred; comparable ERP experience considered.
  • CPA or progress toward certification preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to manage competing deadlines.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Paid time off and paid volunteer days.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • FSA, HSA, and dependent care account options.
  • Employee assistance and wellness programs.
