Controller – Real Estate Development


Location: New Jersey (On-site/Hybrid)


Salary: $175,000 – $200,000 (plus benefits and incentives)


About the Company:

Our client is a well-established real estate developer based in New Jersey, specializing in ground-up, mixed-use luxury multifamily residential projects ranging from 50 to 500+ units. With an active pipeline and a strong reputation in the NJ market, the company is seeking a seasoned Controller to lead all aspects of accounting and financial management.


Position Overview:

The Controller will oversee the company’s construction accounting, property management accounting, and general operations accounting functions. This role requires a hands-on leader with proven experience supporting residential development projects in the NJ market.


Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the full-cycle accounting function across construction, development, property management, and corporate operations.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow reporting.
  • Oversee accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, and job cost accounting.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax requirements, and internal controls.
  • Collaborate with project managers, executives, and external partners on financial strategy and project performance.
  • Implement and manage systems including Procore, Sage, and Yardi.
  • Provide financial insights to support decision-making on current and upcoming developments.
  • Mentor and supervise accounting staff as the team grows.


Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Proven track record working with a residential real estate developer in the NJ market.
  • Deep expertise in construction accounting, property management accounting, and operational accounting.
  • Proficiency with Procore, Sage, and Yardi is required.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, job costing, and financial reporting.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • CPA designation preferred but not required.
