Position: Full‑Time, On‑Site

Salary based on experience : $150k-$170K plus medical coverage

Our client is a respected, family‑owned site excavation subcontractor in Northern New Jersey with a long track record of stable, scalable growth. They specialize in heavy civil, utility, and earthwork projects for leading general contractors, construction managers, and developers.

 

Role Overview

The Civil Site Work Foreman will lead on-site crews through all phases of civil site work—grading, excavation, underground utilities, and site prep. As the Civil Forman you are the on-site manager who ensures crews, equipment, and materials are coordinated efficiently, safely, and to spec—bridging the gap between field execution and project leadership. You should be able to use technology effectively as you collaborate with PMs, superintendents, and operators to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to spec.

 

Key Responsibilities


Crew Leadership & Supervision

  • They lead and manage site personnel—typically laborers, equipment operators, and subcontractors—often across multiple crews focused on tasks like excavation, grading, trenching, or utilities

Planning & Scheduling

  • Create and adjust daily work schedules, delegate tasks based on crew size and project demands, and ensure everyone knows their assignments .

Blueprint and Plan Management

  • Read, interpret, and convey site plans, specifications, and method statements to crews, ensuring work aligns with design and quality requirements

Safety & Quality Oversight

  • Enforce PPE usage, conduct toolbox talks, perform site inspections, and halt unsafe or substandard work.

Material & Equipment Coordination

  • Manage deliveries, equipment usage, maintenance needs, and staging of materials; notify superintendents of issues

Progress Reporting & Issue Resolution

  • Provide real-time updates to superintendents or project managers about crew output, site conditions, constraints, or potential delays


Heavy Equipment Oversight


Supervise Operators

  • You'll directly oversee heavy equipment operators (e.g., excavators, dozers, graders, loaders), ensuring they follow project specs, operate safely, and maintain productivity

Schedule & Allocate Equipment

  • You determine which machines are needed daily, coordinate their deployment, and make sure replacements or rentals are lined up to avoid downtime

Inspect & Maintain Machinery

  • Equipment checks—you inspect machines daily, monitor maintenance schedules, report issues, and ensure repairs are made promptly

Ensure Safe Operation

  • You enforce safe operating practices, hold toolbox talks, ensure operators wear PPE, and stop unsafe operation to prevent accidents



What "Site Work Oversight" Covers

Daily Operations Management

  • Supervising and coordinating site crews—including laborers, operators, and subcontractors—to ensure tasks like excavation, grading, trenching, and utility installation are performed efficiently
  • Planning daily activities, assigning responsibilities, and adjusting on the fly based on site progress or obstacles .

Equipment & Material Coordination

  • Scheduling and allocating heavy machinery; ensuring operators have what they need and the equipment is maintained
  • Managing material deliveries, staging, inventory, and liaising with suppliers

Blueprint & Plan Enforcement

  • Interpreting site plans and specs, making sure crews install elements with correct elevations, grades, and tolerances
  • Conducting regular site inspections and quality checks

Safety & Compliance Enforcement

  • Leading toolbox talks, enforcing PPE usage, and stopping unsafe practices
  • Conducting site risk assessments and ensuring OSHA or company safety standards are adhered to .

Reporting & Communication

  • Acting as the field-level liaison—providing updates to superintendents or PMs on progress, delays, weather impacts, or resource constraints .
  • Keeping daily logs or reports documenting work performed, materials used, and any incidents

Problem-Solving & Adaptation

  • Identifying issues—such as equipment breakdowns or weather delays—and implementing corrective plans to maintain schedule and budget
  • Re-sequencing tasks or reallocating crews as jobsite variables change


Qualifications & Requirements


  • Minimum 10 years’ experience overseeing civil site excavation, grading, or underground utilities
  • Proven supervisory/leadership experience managing crews in a heavy civil site setting
  • Skilled heavy equipment operator; GPS machine control experience highly preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret civil/site development plans and specs
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL Class A/B preferred
  • OSHA 10/30‑hour, confined space, and other relevant safety certifications
  • Strong communication, time‑management, and problem‑solving capabilities
  • Physically fit and able to work outdoors in varying conditions; able to lift ~50 lb and operate equipment
