Our client, a well-established General Contractor based in Northern New Jersey, is seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Controller to lead their accounting operations. This is a key leadership position responsible for managing all financial aspects of the company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong internal controls.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including banking, payroll, A/R, A/P, and general ledger management
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Manage AIA billings, lien waivers, and payment applications
  • Coordinate closely with banks, bonding agents, and insurance companies
  • Supervise job cost accounting and ensure alignment with budgets and projections
  • Maintain compliance with all state and federal tax regulations
  • Lead internal financial audits and coordinate with external accountants during year-end closings
  • Provide financial reporting and forecasting to ownership and executive team
  • Implement and enforce financial policies and procedures


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years of accounting experience in the construction industry
  • Expert proficiency in both QuickBooks and Sage (Sage 100 Contractor or Sage 300 preferred)
  • Strong experience with construction-specific financial functions:
  • AIA billings
  • Certified payroll reporting
  • Job costing and WIP schedules
  • Banking & cash management
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and construction accounting standards
  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


Preferred Attributes:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA or CMA designation (a plus, but not required)
  • Experience working with subcontractors and vendors
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
