Commodity Manager
At US Steel Corp in Avon, Ohio, we turn raw materials into high-quality furniture, home furnishings, and industrial components that customers rely on every day. As Commodity Manager you will own the supply of metals, chemicals, and specialty inputs that keep our production lines running and our costs competitive. Your decisions will directly protect margins and enable the next phase of growth for this 51–200 person manufacturer.
Performance Objectives
- Cut total landed cost of the top 10 commodities 8–12% within 18 months through dual-sourcing, volume aggregation, and index-based contracts.
- Achieve 98% on-time delivery of critical materials by building a 6-month rolling forecast and qualifying at least two backup suppliers per category.
- Negotiate and execute 15+ multi-year agreements covering 80% of annual spend, locking in price caps and volume flexibility.
- Reduce inventory days of supply 20% while eliminating stock-outs of production-critical items.
- Launch a supplier scorecard and quarterly business reviews that improve on-time, quality, and cost metrics across the vendor base.
- Identify and implement two process or material substitutions that lower cost or environmental impact without compromising product performance.
Environment & Resources
You will report to the Operations Director and partner daily with Production, Quality, and Finance. You will have full authority over commodity spend, access to ERP and spend-analytics tools, and a modest travel budget for supplier visits. The team is lean, so you will both set strategy and execute.
Essential Qualifications
- 5+ years managing commodity or category spend in manufacturing (metals, chemicals, or industrial components preferred).
- Proven track record of delivering measurable cost savings and supply-risk reduction.
- Hands-on experience negotiating contracts, building forecasts, and running supplier performance programs.
- Comfort working in an early-stage, 50–200 employee environment where you wear multiple hats.
- Strong Excel and ERP skills; ability to turn data into action without a large support staff.
