Job Summary
The Transportation Manager develops and directs transportation operations while supporting compressed gas, bulk gas, and dry ice distribution activities. The Manager is responsible for planning, dispatching, logistics, safety, compliance, equipment management, and leading a network of professional drivers while maintaining exceptional service and collaborative relationships with customers and associates throughout the organization.
Essential Job Functions
Logistics and Personnel Management
- Evaluate and coordinate workloads and schedule equipment and driver assignments required to meet daily customer needs.
- Monitor daily transportation operations and serve as the primary contact for drivers within assigned territories.
- Ensure special deliveries are executed efficiently and that associated fees adequately offset transportation costs.
- Act as a liaison with customers regarding transportation-related service concerns and delivery issues.
- Conduct regular departmental meetings and participate in management meetings as required.
- Coach and provide ongoing performance feedback to employees, assist with conflict resolution, and conduct performance evaluations to promote safe, productive, and customer-focused performance.
- Approve PTO requests and coordinate coverage for vacations and personal leave.
Compliance and Safety Management
- Ensure compliance with all transportation safety standards, including DOT regulations, load safety requirements, and company safety policies.
- Maintain ongoing engagement with regulatory agencies, industry associations, and consultants to ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, DOT, CGA, FDA, and other regulatory requirements.
- Verify that drivers maintain proper licensing, CDL qualifications, hazardous materials endorsements, and other required certifications.
- Promote safe work practices through safety audits, company safety meetings, and one-on-one coaching sessions.
- Conduct employee training on hazardous materials handling, onboarding, quality improvement initiatives, and the proper use of technology and equipment.
- In partnership with Human Resources, coordinate employee and applicant drug testing while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with recordkeeping requirements.
- Investigate transportation incidents and accidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Fleet Management
- Maintain fleet vehicles to support safe operations and professional company representation while ensuring drivers complete inspections and documentation accurately.
- Coordinate responses to equipment failures and provide guidance to drivers during breakdowns or roadside incidents.
- Direct vendors and maintenance personnel responsible for repairs while ensuring work is completed efficiently and within budget.
- Develop and oversee preventive maintenance programs, vehicle records, and maintenance documentation.
- Manage equipment repair policies, procedures, and work plan requirements.
General Management
- Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams to develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
- Recommend and implement process improvement initiatives, cost reduction strategies, and workflow enhancements.
- Develop and manage departmental budgets and annual operating plans, including performance goals and objectives.
- Develop, implement, and monitor distribution procedures to maximize efficiency and ensure on-time delivery performance.
- Oversee processes related to emergency customer deliveries and service recovery efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support safety, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
