Commodity Manager
We manufacture furniture, home furnishings, and related products that customers use every day. Your work securing the right materials at the right cost and quality directly determines whether we can deliver on time, protect margins, and scale production without disruption. This role sits at the center of our supply chain and turns sourcing into a competitive advantage.
Performance Objectives
- Negotiate and lock in annual commodity contracts covering 80%+ of spend within the first 90 days, delivering at least 8% cost savings versus prior year while holding quality and lead-time targets.
- Build dual-source coverage for the top 10 raw materials within six months so no single supplier can halt production.
- Reduce inventory days of supply by 15% in the first year through better forecast alignment and supplier-managed inventory agreements.
- Implement a monthly commodity-risk dashboard that flags price, availability, and geopolitical exposure 60 days ahead of impact.
- Onboard two new qualified suppliers per quarter that meet our quality, sustainability, and delivery standards and convert at least one into a primary source.
- Cut expedited freight and quality-related scrap costs by 20% within 12 months by tightening specs and supplier scorecards.
Environment & Resources
You report to the Supply Chain Director and work daily with production, quality, and finance. You will have a dedicated buyer supporting execution, access to our ERP and spend-analytics tools, and a travel budget for supplier visits. Decision rights on contracts under $250k sit with you; larger awards go through a simple two-step review.
Essential Qualifications
- Proven track record negotiating multi-year commodity contracts that delivered measurable cost, quality, or availability improvements.
- Hands-on experience managing steel, lumber, chemicals, or similar industrial inputs in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read market data, build should-cost models, and translate them into negotiation strategies that suppliers accept.
- Comfort working with ERP data, supplier scorecards, and simple risk models; you do not need to be a data scientist.
- Willingness to visit plants and mills; this is not a desk-only role.
Role Selling Points
- Direct line of sight from your contracts to the shop floor—your decisions show up in next month’s production numbers.
- Early-stage manufacturing environment where one person can still change the entire sourcing playbook.
- Lean team, fast decisions, and real ownership of outcomes rather than layers of approval.
- Opportunity to professionalize commodity management as we grow from regional to national scale.
