seeking a Heavy Equipment Superintendent / Manager to lead our Equipment Division and keep our projects supplied with safe, reliable, and well-maintained gear. You’ll oversee everything from large excavators and dozers to trucks, trailers, and small tools—blending strategic fleet management with hands-on leadership.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee the full equipment lifecycle: selection, purchasing/rentals, assignment, maintenance, and disposal.
- Manage a mixed fleet of heavy equipment, support vehicles, trailers, and small tools across multiple jobsites.
- Lead and mentor shop and field mechanics/technicians; set daily priorities and guide complex repairs.
- Build and manage preventive maintenance programs; minimize downtime and maximize uptime.
- Ensure safety and compliance with DOT, OSHA, and company standards; lead inspections and safety meetings.
- Coordinate equipment moves and scheduling with project managers and superintendents.
- Manage vendor relationships (dealers, rental houses, parts suppliers); negotiate pricing and service terms.
- Track utilization, costs, and key fleet metrics; support buy vs. rent decisions and budgeting.
What a Typical Day Looks Like
- Reviewing fleet status and reallocating equipment to critical jobs.
- Working with mechanics to troubleshoot high-impact equipment issues.
- Checking shop operations and PM schedules.
- Walking the yard or jobsites to inspect machines for safety and readiness.
- Negotiating with vendors on purchases or rentals.
- Holding quick huddles with your team around safety and priorities.
Key Measures of Success
- High equipment uptime (target 95%+).
- Reduced cost per operating hour and optimized own vs. rent mix.
- Zero serious equipment-related safety incidents.
- Strong, stable mechanic/tech team with low turnover.
- Clean DOT/OSHA audits and full compliance.
- Right-sized fleet with high utilization and minimal idle iron.
Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years managing heavy equipment fleets, equipment operations, or similar superintendent/manager role.
- Strong mechanical aptitude (diesel, hydraulics, electrical) and ability to direct complex repairs.
- Proven leadership experience managing mechanics/technicians/operators.
- Working knowledge of DOT regulations and transportation compliance (or CDL with strong DOT familiarity).
- Experience managing equipment budgets, purchasing, and maintenance costs.
- Safety-first mindset and familiarity with OSHA standards.
- Ability to coordinate across multiple projects and work in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred:
- Experience with major brands (Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, etc.).
- Familiarity with fleet management / CMMS software and telematics.
- Technical training in diesel or heavy equipment.
- Construction background (heavy civil, industrial, or infrastructure).
- Vendor negotiation experience with OEMs, rental companies, and parts suppliers.
