A Day in the Life of the Senior Backend Software Engineer

This backend engineer role serves to enhance the current team and help solve problems related to server side development and system scalability. The application is built with Python, Django, PostgreSQL, and React through AWS and current infrastructure relies on Kubernetes and terraform, with several specialty services for higher volume needs and AI processing. The team deploys weekly and has actively maintained a 99.99% uptime.

The current team has 9 engineers, mixing AI, front end, back end, and UX roles and strives for a highly collaborative environment.

Responsibilities include:

• Act as an owner on the backend development team
• Plan and execute a development roadmap from company objectives
• Implement auditing tools and ways to adhere to and ensure high HIPAA standards.
• Interact with the medical team to understand their needs and build features based on collected input.
• Work with lab teams to understand their workflow concerns and identify potential optimizations.
• Utilize test driven development with continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD) tools
• Build and maintain integrations into hospitals, laboratories, and dermatology clinics
• Become familiar with deep learning (supervised and unsupervised learning techniques) and work in tandem with the existing development team
• Manage large amounts of data (both transfers and storage) on AWS as well as local servers
• Learn HL7 and how to interface with healthcare backends
• Coding in Python, Django, Flask, and PostgreSQL
• Maintain strong security practices and help enforce security policies.

Qualifications of the Senior Backend Software Engineer

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or related STEM field
• Six or more years of web development experience
• 4+ years experience coding in Python, Django, Flask, and PostgreSQL
• Experience with AWS and Kubernetes
• Some exposure to product management or project leadership
• Willingness to be on call as necessary for evening and weekend hours
• Occasional travel is required (No more than 2 times per year)
