The Litigation Legal Assistant provides high-level support to attorneys engaged in civil and/or commercial litigation. This role requires strong organizational skills, legal knowledge, discretion, and the ability to manage litigation cases from inception through trial.
This position is “at-will,” meaning employment can be terminated by either the Firm or the employee at any time, with or without cause, and with or without notice.
The Litigation Legal Assistant is not authorized to practice law under Colorado law and must act under the supervision of licensed attorneys. All duties must comply with applicable state laws and the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct.
- Uphold the confidentiality of all Firm and client information.
- Comply with all ethical and legal standards set by the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance while representing the Firm.
- Prepare initial drafts of legal correspondence, internal memoranda, filings, and client-facing documents under attorney supervision.
- Accurately record and manage billable hours daily using the Firm’s timekeeping system at the attorney/client’s request.
- Exercise sound judgment and discretion in job performance.
- Contribute to a collaborative work environment and provide support as assigned.
- Monitor case calendars, track deadlines, and proactively alert attorneys to upcoming dates.
- Assist with trial preparation including preparation of trial binders, exhibit lists, witness coordination, and courtroom logistics.
- Maintain and organize case files, discovery materials, deposition summaries, and legal research in physical and digital formats.
- Draft litigation documents including:
- Pleadings and motions
- Initial and expert disclosures
- Discovery requests and responses
- Subpoenas, witness lists, pre-trial orders, and related materials
- Manage the document production process and coordinate electronic discovery (eDiscovery).
- Conduct factual investigations, background research, and initial legal research using tools such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, PACER, and AI-supported legal platforms.
- Coordinate with opposing counsel and legal staff to streamline case scheduling and procedural agreements if requested by the lead attorney.
- Assist attorneys during trial or arbitration, including managing exhibits, scheduling, and courtroom support.
- Strong understanding of litigation processes, procedures, and court filing requirements (state and federal).
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and litigation support platforms (e.g., Relativity, TrialDirector).
- Excellent legal writing, research, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and initiative.
- Minimum 3 years of experience supporting litigation attorneys in a law firm or corporate legal department.
- Familiarity with Colorado and federal court systems, including CM/ECF and ICCES (now Colorado Courts E-Filing).
