Job Description: Principal Electrical Engineer

Our client, a leader in the Electric Power Industry, is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead and manage electrical engineering projects, provide technical expertise to clients, and guide and mentor a team of engineers. Your contributions will be crucial in delivering high-quality electrical engineering design services and ensuring client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the US and internationally.
  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams to create industry-leading designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments, covering distribution, generation, institutional, industrial, and manufacturing facilities. This role can significantly influence the resilience and reliability of the electric grid.

Job Requirements:

  • Plan engineering strategies for the organization.
  • Manage engineering departments in tasks like research and design.
  • Determine department goals and create implementation plans.
  • Provide expert advice to team members.
  • Create and manage engineering budgets.
  • Assist in contract negotiations with vendors.
  • Develop and implement process improvements.
  • Create conceptual designs, execution plans, cost estimates, and project schedules for proposals.
  • Work with customers to develop project and site-specific design scope documents.
  • Guide the engineering team in executing activities such as:
  • Physical substation design, including yard layouts, plans, sections, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, auxiliary power systems, and related bills of material.
  • Protection and control design, including panel arrangements, one-line and three-line diagrams, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
  • Conduct calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lightning protection, etc.).
  • Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and factory acceptance testing.
  • Lead the coordination of design activities with civil/structural, SCADA, system protection, and transmission line teams.
  • Implement processes, tools, and technologies.
  • Develop and provide training for less experienced engineers and team members.
  • Regularly mentor Engineering Managers and Leads to enhance their skills.
  • Perform quality oversight, managing the development of quality plans and associated training.
  • Conduct quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
  • Perform third-party quality reviews of designs by others.
  • Provide input into performance reviews of employees.
  • Offer short-term field support during construction.
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives.
  • Participate in industry events and professional technical committees.
  • Carry out unique designs requiring unconventional approaches or research.
  • Provide expert advice to other engineers.
  • Conduct research and present findings while staying informed about technological developments.
  • May participate in public meetings and licensing hearings as an expert witness.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
  • Minimum 25 years of related experience.
  • Proficiency with the National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and IEEE/ANSI standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capability to solve complex problems by adapting standard approaches to meet specific challenges.
  • Up to 25% travel may be required.
