Title: Data Center M&E Engineering – NA Operations and Engineering


Purpose of the Role:

The role is required to provide engineering support for the overall management, execution and successful deployment of mechanical and electrical infrastructure associated with data center white space. The role will also provide support to 3rd party engineering and commissioning firms hired by our company. The prime focus will be on America projects for the E-Trade data centers. In addition to projects, the engineering resource will provide technical guidance to EDC NA operations teams where new products & designs are introduced into the M&E infrastructure.

A key element of the role will involve close liaison with all members of our company project and operations teams, plus our company’s chosen data centre construction partners, various trade contractors and Professional teams in order to assist the MS Project Management team to deliver White Space on time and to budget.

This position will report directly to the Global Head of Engineering (Dave Franczak in Somerset, NJ) to ensure that the strategic direction, engineering, and quality standards are successfully delivered in the North American operating region.

Due to the nature of the role, the candidate needs to be highly motivated, proactive, willing to embrace change in a fast moving environment, work collaboratively and able to work unsupervised with a high level of attention to detail.


Key Responsibilities:

• Participate as an active member of our company project team & represent the M&E Engineering team in North America, both internally and externally.

• Help develop & deliver:

o Oversee whitespace mechanical and electrical design from concept to construction level detail & be fully conversant with the design and its subsequent implementation & changes.

o Our company hires 3rd party engineering firms for a full design package. This resource will be responsible for overseeing the firms’ activity.

o Work with the NA operations team to ensure integration of our company operational standards with the engineering design.

o Creation of, and assist with, RFP & RFI documentation relating to the MS White Space products and services as it relates to the M&E infrastructure.

o Assist with overall project programming.

o Ensure M&E infrastructure products and installation are in compliance with local & national AHJ requirements, as well as specific MS and manufacturer installation standards

o Provide regular and detailed reports of project progress to the MS project team, including advance notice of potential issues, issue tracking and resolution, contractor progress and the like.

o All other day to day project related documentation and reporting as required.

o Close liaison with our company key strategic M&E infrastructure manufacturers.

o Build a relationship with the Contractor(s), including installation staff (foreman and engineers) and become involved with the contractors programme of works for the days and weeks ahead & provide guidance on installation, good practice and the like.

o Ensure projects aims are delivered on time and to budget

o Be familiar with commissioning processes for mechanical and electrical infrastructure including the requirements of level 1 through 4 commissioning, level 5 integrated system test, and room verification tests.

o Support the commissioning vendor hired by our company to perform all commissioning of the mechanical and electrical infrastructure supporting the white space.

o Conduct regular construction site walks and / or attend site meetings as required in order to quickly resolve installation issues.

 Examples of site inspection activities include installation, quality, and progress checks for electrical switchgear, UPS systems, power distribution, and HVAC.

 Review commissioning and testing implementation plans and method of procedures (MOPs) for the tie-in and start up of critical M&E equipment.

o Be available to make informed decisions relating to the installation, including ensuring key stake holders are informed and agreement sought as appropriate.

o Report urgent action items / concerns as required to local project management and operations.

o Report back on a daily / weekly basis to Global Head of Engineering on progress, issues, decision points taken as required.

o Become fully conversant with our company building management systems including Siemens and Schneider.

o Review and approval of as built information, commissioning, and testing final reports.

• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with EDC North America DC Operations Team and other critical facility stakeholders, to ensure a successful hand over from project to operations team.


Key Skills:

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or be able to show equivalent level of education in a relevant engineering discipline. Industry experience such as working up through the Electrical trades and/or operations will also be considered.

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience with the design and construction industry, with a minimum of 3 years within the financial or other blue chip vertical markets.

• Demonstrate clear understanding of data center M&E infrastructure with knowledge of relevant local, national and international standards.

• Experienced in delivering high value, fast track projects within critical operating environments that have complex and exacting installation and performance criteria.

• Basic understanding of data center infrastructure resiliency and design.

• Able to establish and manage relationships with internal clients, and external vendors / suppliers

• Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of applications, including Visio, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

• AutoCAD application experience and knowledge a plus

• Experience with BMS and DCIM software platforms a plus

• Willingness to learn and develop


Working Practice:

Due to the nature of this role and our company’s needs, the successful candidate must be prepared to be based at our company’s facilities in Alpharetta, Georgia, to support ongoing E-Trade integration / builds. There is a current data center that is to be expanded as well as a new site to be built at two (2) colocation facilities in Alpharetta, Georgia. Additional travel will be required to our company's data center sites in Ashburn, Va., and New Jersey.

Depending on the candidate’s ability and Alpharetta project workload, additional projects and opportunities to develop within MS may be offered.

Due to the nature of the role, it is anticipated that occasional weekend working will be required during critical installation, commissioning and testing periods.
