Federally Qualified Health Center | Virginia

A mission-driven Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) is seeking an experienced Controller to provide leadership and oversight of the organization’s day-to-day financial operations. This is a key financial leadership position responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting compliance with federal grant and regulatory requirements.

The Controller will oversee core accounting functions while partnering with organizational leadership on budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, audits, and overall financial performance. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, experience with federal grants and Single Audits, and the ability to operate effectively within a mission-driven healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and fixed assets.
• Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
• Lead organizational budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
• Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and key financial performance indicators.
• Develop and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure the integrity of financial information.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, HRSA requirements, Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Monitor and report on Section 330 funding and other federal, state, and local grants.
• Coordinate annual financial and Single Audits and serve as a primary liaison with external auditors.
• Support Uniform Data System (UDS) financial reporting requirements.
• Partner with revenue cycle leadership to monitor patient service revenue, billing, collections, payer reimbursement, and accounts receivable performance.
• Analyze Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and value-based reimbursement methodologies.
• Supervise, develop, and mentor accounting and finance team members.
• Maintain compliance with tax-exempt organization requirements and required financial filings.
• Communicate financial results, trends, and complex financial information effectively to executive leadership and Board members.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• Minimum of seven years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, including at least three years in a leadership capacity.
• Demonstrated experience with federal grants management and Single Audits required.
• Experience with Sage Intacct required.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, internal controls, and federal grant compliance.
• Healthcare, nonprofit, or FQHC experience strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of FQHC reimbursement methodologies, including Medicare and Medicaid cost reporting, strongly preferred.
• CPA designation strongly preferred; MBA or advanced Finance degree preferred.
• Experience with ADP preferred.
• Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
• Advanced proficiency with financial management systems and Microsoft Excel.

Compensation: $100,000–$120,000 annually
