Position Overview

A mission-driven nonprofit healthcare organization in Texas is seeking an experienced Medical Director to provide clinical leadership for its statewide virtual care program while also providing physician oversight and leadership for its Dallas clinic.

This position combines direct patient care with physician leadership and is designed for a Texas-based physician who values the flexibility of a predominantly virtual role while remaining connected to an onsite clinical team. The Medical Director will provide virtual patient care across the state of Texas and is expected to travel to the Dallas clinic approximately 1–2 times per month to provide onsite clinical leadership, support, and engagement.

The organization is dedicated to expanding access to high-quality, culturally affirming healthcare and has particular expertise serving LGBTQIA+ individuals and people impacted by HIV. The Medical Director will oversee clinical quality and provider performance, supervise physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), and partner closely with the Chief Medical Officer and operational leadership to advance clinical quality, efficiency, and patient outcomes across both virtual and onsite care environments.

Key Responsibilities

Virtual Care & Clinical Leadership

• Provide physician leadership and clinical oversight for a statewide virtual care program serving patients throughout Texas.
• Maintain an active virtual clinical practice while providing leadership, consultation, and support to the broader clinical team.
• Provide clinical leadership and oversight for the organization's Dallas clinic, including onsite presence approximately 1–2 times per month.
• Provide leadership for physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, nurses, medical assistants, and other members of the interdisciplinary clinical team.
• Oversee clinical quality, provider performance, and adherence to evidence-based standards of care.
• Establish expectations for clinical performance and coordination of services in partnership with medical and operational leadership.
• Serve as an accessible clinical resource for providers working across virtual and onsite environments.
• Partner with operational leadership to improve clinical efficiency, workflows, policies, and overall program performance.
• Support provider recruitment, onboarding, development, engagement, and retention.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing clinical environment across geographically dispersed teams.

Direct Patient Care

• Maintain an active clinical practice, with approximately 80% of the position dedicated to direct patient care.
• Deliver care primarily through the organization's virtual care platform to patients located throughout Texas.
• Provide evidence-based care across the organization's clinical scope, including HIV prevention and treatment, PrEP and PEP, STI care, sexual health, and gender-affirming care.
• Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations and develop appropriate treatment plans.
• Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions.
• Order and interpret laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic testing as appropriate.
• Coordinate referrals to specialists and ancillary services to support continuity of care.
• Collaborate with nurses, case managers, patient advocates, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team.
• Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation and patient follow-up.
• Provide clinical coverage and consultation when other providers are unavailable.

Dallas Clinic Oversight

• Serve as a physician leader and clinical resource for the Dallas clinic.
• Maintain regular communication with Dallas clinical and operational leadership.
• Travel to the Dallas clinic approximately 1–2 times monthly to engage directly with providers and staff, support clinical operations, and maintain visibility as a physician leader.
• Monitor clinical performance, quality, compliance, and provider development within the Dallas clinic.
• Partner with operational leadership to identify and address opportunities to improve patient care, provider performance, workflows, and clinic efficiency.
• Support provider engagement, recruitment, retention, and team development.
• Provide leadership and guidance related to clinical concerns, patient safety, and performance issues.

Provider Supervision & Development

• Provide supervision and clinical guidance to Advanced Practice Providers in accordance with Texas Medical Board requirements.
• Maintain appropriate availability to supervised providers for clinical questions, consultation, and escalation of patient care.
• Conduct regular chart reviews and clinical documentation audits.
• Meet regularly with supervised providers to provide coaching, feedback, and professional development.
• Monitor clinical performance and ensure providers practice within established policies, clinical guidelines, and delegated authority.
• Participate in provider performance evaluations, peer review, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Support clinical education and provider development initiatives as assigned.

Quality Improvement & Operations

• Lead and participate in clinical quality improvement and performance improvement initiatives across virtual and onsite services.
• Monitor clinical quality measures and identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes and experience.
• Partner with clinical quality and operational leaders to implement evidence-based practices and improve care delivery.
• Identify and mitigate potential clinical and patient-safety risks.
• Participate in the development and revision of clinical policies, procedures, protocols, and standards.
• Support staff training and competency development.
• Promote responsible utilization of clinical resources while maintaining high standards of care.
• Work with leadership to identify and reduce health inequities and barriers to accessing care.
• Participate in community engagement and outreach initiatives as appropriate.

Qualifications

Education & Licensure

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
• Active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas.
• Active board certification in primary care or an applicable medical specialty.
• Active DEA registration.
• Current BLS certification or ability to obtain and maintain required certification.

Experience

• Minimum of five years of clinical experience, including demonstrated leadership within a healthcare setting.
• Previous experience supervising Advanced Practice Providers required.
• Experience providing care through telehealth or virtual care platforms preferred.
• Experience providing care to diverse and underserved patient populations.
• Experience with HIV care, HIV prevention/PrEP, LGBTQIA+ health, and/or gender-affirming care strongly preferred.
• Experience developing or implementing clinical policies, quality initiatives, or performance improvement programs preferred.
• Experience leading or collaborating with geographically dispersed clinical teams is highly valued.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be an experienced physician leader who is comfortable providing care and leadership in both virtual and onsite clinical environments.

This individual should be highly communicative, accessible, and capable of building strong relationships with providers and staff even when working remotely. The Medical Director will need to balance the autonomy of a predominantly virtual position with a commitment to maintaining a meaningful leadership presence at the Dallas clinic.
