Chief Financial Officer

Community change depends on resources that arrive on time, stay compliant, and get to the work that prevents crisis before it starts. This role turns generosity and grants into durable funding for prevention, early intervention, and local leadership. You will make the numbers clear enough that staff, volunteers, and partners can act with confidence—and bold enough that the mission can grow.

Performance Objectives

  • Deliver a rolling financial plan that funds priority human-service outcomes and keeps cash, reserves, and restricted funds in balance.
  • Close the books and issue board-ready reports on a reliable calendar so leaders can adjust programs before gaps widen.
  • Pass the annual audit and funder reviews with clean findings by tightening controls, documentation, and grant compliance.
  • Partner with program leaders to shift dollars toward prevention and early intervention that show measurable community results.
  • Forecast revenue from donations, grants, and campaigns so leadership can commit to multi-year work without surprise shortfalls.
  • Build a finance team that produces accurate work, explains tradeoffs in plain language, and develops the next generation of nonprofit finance leaders.
  • Present a clear financial story to the board and community partners that links every major investment to impact.

Environment & Resources

You report to the chief executive and partner with the board finance committee. You lead finance and accounting within a mid-size nonprofit team and work daily with program, fundraising, and operations colleagues. You will have access to the general ledger, donor and grant records, an external audit firm, and a budget process tied to community priorities—not a stand-alone back office.

Essential Qualifications

  • Proven leadership of nonprofit or complex mission-driven finance, including restricted funds, grants, and audits.
  • A record of producing timely, decision-useful forecasts and board reporting—not just historical statements.
  • Hands-on command of internal controls and funder compliance that has reduced findings or risk.
  • Experience allocating limited resources with program leaders against outcome goals.
  • Ability to explain financial choices to non-financial audiences and earn their trust.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent depth strongly preferred.

Why This Role

  • Your judgment directly funds prevention and early help, not only crisis response.
  • You will combine resources across partners so dollars do more together than apart.
  • You will develop leaders—on your team and in the community—who carry the work forward.
  • Impact is local, visible, and tied to pressing human-service needs.

Apply

If you want your next chapter measured by stronger communities as well as a stronger balance sheet, send your resume and a short note on a financial decision you made that changed what a mission could do.
