Audit Manager – State & Local Government

Overview

This Audit Manager role supports a growing State & Local Government practice serving municipalities, school districts, and public authorities. The position exists to lead complex governmental audit engagements, oversee financial reporting, and serve as a trusted advisor to public-sector clients navigating evolving accounting and compliance requirements.

You’ll work closely with Partners and cross-office teams, taking ownership of engagements from planning through issuance while mentoring audit staff and strengthening long-term client relationships. This role is well-suited for an experienced governmental auditor who values leadership, technical depth, and community impact.


Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage audit engagements for state and local government entities, ensuring quality, accuracy, and on-time delivery
  • Plan audit strategies, perform risk assessments, and tailor procedures to client-specific operations
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GASB standards
  • Ensure compliance with GAGAS, Single Audit requirements (OMB Uniform Guidance), and applicable state and federal regulations
  • Evaluate and document internal controls; provide practical recommendations for improvement
  • Serve as primary client contact throughout the audit lifecycle, addressing issues and providing value-added guidance
  • Review audit workpapers and deliverables; oversee quality control and final issuance
  • Mentor and develop audit staff through coaching, feedback, and technical guidance
  • Support training initiatives related to accounting standards, audit methodology, and industry-specific issues
  • Collaborate with Partners and senior leadership on engagement planning, process improvements, and practice growth
  • Participate in proposal efforts, presentations, and relationship-building activities as needed


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting
  • Active CPA license
  • 6+ years of audit experience, with a strong focus on governmental audits
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP, GAAS, GASB, GAGAS, and Single Audit requirements
  • Prior experience leading engagements and supervising audit teams
  • Strong judgment, professionalism, and ability to manage confidential information
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet firm and client deadlines
  • Community-oriented mindset and interest in public-sector work
