Accounting Manager
Location: San Mateo, CA
Schedule: On-site, five days per week
Base Salary: $130,000–$150,000
The Opportunity
Our client, a privately held financial services firm in San Mateo, is seeking an Accounting Manager to join its growing team. This is a hands-on, full-cycle accounting role for someone who enjoys working across a broad range of responsibilities and can move comfortably between detailed accounting work, financial reporting, and interaction with stakeholders throughout the organization.
The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in public accounting, either currently at the Senior level or combined with subsequent industry experience. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys the technical rigor and client-service orientation of public accounting but is ready to move into an internal role with greater ownership and exposure to the business.
What You'll Do
- Own key aspects of the full accounting cycle, including general ledger activity, month-end close, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
- Prepare and review financial statements and supporting schedules, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely reporting.
- Analyze balance sheet and income statement accounts, investigate variances, and resolve discrepancies.
- Maintain strong accounting processes and controls while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reporting.
- Partner with colleagues and stakeholders across all levels of the organization, providing responsive and thoughtful service.
- Support accounting and reporting related to investments, entities, and other financial activities.
- Coordinate with external tax, audit, banking, investment, and other professional service partners as needed.
- Manage multiple priorities and shifting needs in a dynamic environment where flexibility and sound judgment are essential.
- Take on special projects and evolving responsibilities as the needs of the organization grow and change.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Approximately 4–7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Current or recent public accounting experience at the Senior level strongly considered; candidates with a combination of public accounting and private industry experience are also encouraged.
- CPA strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and full-cycle accounting, including general ledger, financial statements, month-end close, and reconciliations.
- Experience working in a professional, service-oriented environment with a high level of responsiveness and attention to stakeholder needs.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of an organization and communicate financial information clearly.
- Comfortable operating in a hands-on role where responsibilities may extend beyond a narrowly defined accounting function.
- Interest in investments, financial services, and/or the family office space.
- Ability and interest in working on-site in San Mateo five days per week.
Why This Opportunity
This role offers the opportunity to take meaningful ownership of the accounting function while gaining exposure to investments and the broader financial activities of a sophisticated privately held organization. It is particularly well suited for someone who values variety, enjoys being close to the business, and wants to build a long-term career in a highly collaborative, service-oriented environment.
