A respected nonprofit affordable housing organization is seeking an Assistant Community Manager to support the daily operations of a supportive housing community in Fairfield, California.


This is an excellent temp-to-hire opportunity for a property management professional who is passionate about affordable housing, resident services, and community impact. Position Summary


The Assistant Community Manager supports the day-to-day operations of a supportive housing community, helping to ensure the property remains safe, compliant, and welcoming for residents. Working closely with the Community Manager, onsite staff, maintenance personnel, and service providers, this position assists with resident relations, affordable housing compliance, rent collection, property operations, and team coordination. The ideal candidate will bring a resident-centered approach while maintaining professionalism, strong organizational skills, and appropriate boundaries in a supportive housing environment.

Essential Responsibilities

Resident Relations & Communication

  • Assist with resident communications and community engagement activities
  • Help resolve resident concerns, complaints, and disputes professionally and effectively
  • Promote understanding of lease requirements, community policies, and resident responsibilities
  • Foster a respectful, welcoming, and inclusive community environment
  • Support resident retention and satisfaction efforts

Property Operations & Affordable Housing Compliance

  • Assist with daily property management operations
  • Support rent collection, deposit processing, and delinquency management
  • Help maintain resident files and documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Ensure compliance with affordable housing programs and applicable regulations
  • Assist with recertifications, occupancy requirements, and reporting obligations
  • Maintain accurate records and property management system data

Maintenance & Facilities Oversight

  • Conduct routine property inspections
  • Monitor building conditions and curb appeal
  • Coordinate with maintenance staff regarding work orders and property needs
  • Help ensure compliance with health, safety, fire, and OSHA requirements
  • Identify maintenance concerns and escalate issues as needed

Emergency Preparedness & Risk Management

  • Assist with emergency preparedness planning and response efforts
  • Complete incident reports involving resident, staff, or property-related events
  • Support implementation of risk management procedures
  • Maintain awareness of safety concerns and appropriate response protocols

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide operational support and guidance to onsite staff when needed
  • Serve as a resource in the absence of the Community Manager
  • Collaborate with resident services staff, community partners, and service providers
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and organizational initiatives
  • Promote a positive, trauma-informed, and team-oriented workplace culture

Additional Duties

  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned
  • Support overall property operations and organizational objectives


Qualifications


Required Qualifications

  • One (1) to two (2) years of residential property management experience
  • At least one year of affordable housing experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • One year of supervisory, lead, or team leadership experience
  • Strong customer service and conflict-resolution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work professionally and effectively with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in supportive housing, permanent supportive housing, or housing programs serving vulnerable populations
  • Experience working with residents experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or other barriers to housing stability
  • Experience using property management software such as RealPage or similar platforms
  • Affordable housing certifications preferred

Certifications

  • Tax Credit Specialist (TCS), Certified Occupancy Specialist (COS), or ability to obtain certification within six months of hire
  • Fair Housing certification required within the first 60 days of employment

  • Knowledge of affordable housing regulations and compliance requirements
  • Understanding of Fair Housing laws and best practices

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Commitment to providing high-quality resident service


Compensation

$25-28 per hour

Compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role.
