Scope of Position
The Purchasing Manager leads strategic procurement activities across multiple categories, ensuring cost efficiency, supplier reliability, and compliance with industry regulations. This role balances the need for optimal inventory levels with cost control, leveraging forecasting tools and market insights to make sound purchasing decisions. The Purchasing Manager collaborates closely with Sales, Marketing, Production, R&D, and external suppliers to drive sourcing strategies, manage vendor performance, and support company growth.
This position requires deep knowledge of packaging components, materials, and processes within the OTC pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The candidate must also be able to expand expertise as industry needs evolve. Strong leadership, negotiation, and analytical skills are essential.

Responsibilities
Strategic Procurement & Leadership
- Develop, lead, and execute purchasing strategies across raw materials, packaging, and services.
- Lead, mentor, and develop purchasing team members.
- Establish KPIs and track functional metrics to reduce costs and improve performance.
- Build negotiation strategies and close contracts with optimal terms.
- Manage major purchasing activities, including price negotiations, supplier agreements, and blanket order commitments.
Supplier & Vendor Management
- Identify, qualify, and manage suppliers to ensure cost, quality, and service excellence.
- Maintain strong vendor relationships while driving corrective actions when issues arise.
- Lead Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs) with key suppliers to evaluate performance and identify improvement opportunities.
- Ensure all suppliers meet company standards, insurance requirements, and applicable FDA and safety regulations.
- Investigate new packaging techniques, materials, and processes to drive innovation and cost savings.
Operational Excellence
- Forecast price trends and market conditions to identify shifts in buyer-supplier dynamics.
- Perform cost, risk, and scenario analyses to support decision-making and ensure continuity of supply.
- Manage inventory levels, safety stocks, and MRP-driven purchasing efficiency.
- Partner with Sales and Production teams to align purchasing plans with forecasts and production schedules.
- Oversee packaging development in collaboration with R&D, from concept to approval of final specifications.
- Monitor daily purchasing reports, track deliveries, and coordinate with suppliers to ensure on-time fulfillment.
- Lead annual raw material budgeting and standard cost analysis.
Compliance & Process Improvement
- Ensure purchasing and packaging activities comply with FDA regulations, GMPs, and internal quality standards.
- Support LEAN initiatives and implement continuous improvement practices across procurement processes.
- Utilize ERP systems and vendor management tools to streamline operations.
- Develop data-driven analysis tools to improve visibility and business results.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business Administration, Finance, or related field required.
- APICS/ASCM CPIM or equivalent certification preferred.
Experience & Skills:
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in professional procurement, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Strong background in Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG); experience with FDA-regulated products strongly preferred.
- Proven track record in sourcing, supplier management, and contract negotiations.
- Strong knowledge of FDA GMPs, product specifications, and inspection procedures.
- Skilled in negotiation, vendor management software, and ERP/MRP systems.
- Familiarity with supplier scorecards, QBRs, and continuous improvement practices.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross-functionally.
- Knowledge of LEAN principles is a plus.
