Senior Manager, Interconnection
Location: Toronto, Ontario
About the Opportunity
A renewable energy developer and owner is seeking a Senior Manager, Interconnection to lead grid-interconnection and high-voltage workstreams across a portfolio of utility-scale energy projects.
The immediate focus will be a portfolio of contracted utility-scale renewable energy projects in Ontario. The role may also support additional projects and future development opportunities across Canada.
Reporting to a senior engineering and construction leader, this person will serve as the organization’s internal expert on transmission interconnection, substations, and high-voltage systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead interconnection activities from initial studies and approvals through engineering, procurement, construction, energization, and commissioning.
- Manage day-to-day coordination with Hydro One Networks Inc., the Independent Electricity System Operator, engineering consultants, EPC contractors, high-voltage subcontractors, and equipment suppliers.
- Oversee connection applications, technical submissions, assessments, agreements, commercial requirements, and commissioning processes.
- Review and challenge technical work prepared by utilities, consultants, contractors, and engineers of record.
- Manage interfaces among generation facilities, substations, transmission lines, grid operators, and utilities.
- Support the procurement of major high-voltage equipment, including main power transformers, breakers, switchgear, and protection systems.
- Assist with the selection and oversight of high-voltage EPC contractors, substation contractors, transmission contractors, and specialist consultants.
- Coordinate separate generation and high-voltage construction scopes where required, including sequencing, testing, energization, and joint commissioning.
- Identify and resolve interconnection risks affecting cost, schedule, design, construction, or regulatory approvals.
- Provide broader electrical and engineering support to project teams and senior leadership.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate has led or materially supported the connection of a transmission-level generation, energy-storage, or major-load project.
Direct experience with the Ontario transmission system is highly valued, particularly experience working with Hydro One and the IESO.
Relevant backgrounds may include:
- Utility-scale solar, wind, or battery-energy storage
- Gas-fired power generation
- Data centres or other major-load connections
- Substation or transmission infrastructure
- High-voltage EPC, utility, consulting, or owner-side project delivery
Solar experience is not required. The primary focus is transmission-level interconnection experience, high-voltage technical depth, and the ability to manage complex utility, consultant, and contractor interfaces.
Qualifications
- Typically five or more years of relevant experience in interconnection, power systems, substations, transmission, or high-voltage project delivery.
- Candidates with significantly more experience, including 15–20 or more years, are encouraged to apply.
- Exceptional candidates with fewer than five years of experience may also be considered.
- Strong understanding of high-voltage AC systems, three-phase power, substations, transmission systems, protection, and grid interconnection.
- Experience supporting projects through one or more of the following stages: study, agreement, design, procurement, construction, energization, or commissioning.
- Ability to assess technical issues independently and work credibly with utilities, system operators, consultants, contractors, and engineers of record.
- Strong project-management, communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder-management skills.
Preferred Experience
- Direct experience connecting a project to the Ontario transmission grid.
- Experience working with Hydro One and the IESO.
- Experience with 115 kV or 230 kV systems.
- Experience with system impact assessments, connection impact assessments, connection cost-recovery agreements, or comparable interconnection processes.
- Owner-side management of interconnection or high-voltage project delivery.
- Experience managing separate generation and high-voltage EPC or construction scopes.
- Experience procuring transformers, breakers, switchgear, protection equipment, or complete substation packages.
- A degree in electrical engineering or another engineering discipline combined with substantial electrical and high-voltage experience.
Location and Work Structure
The organization has a strong preference for someone who can work regularly with its Ontario-based team. Interconnection matters are frequently time-sensitive and benefit from close collaboration with project managers, engineering leadership, and senior management.
This is a permanent, full-time position based in the Toronto area. Some travel will be required.
Compensation
The anticipated base salary is approximately C$140,000–C$160,000, plus a performance-based bonus.
This is not a fixed range. Candidates below or above it may be considered depending on experience, technical depth, knowledge of the Ontario electricity market, and overall fit.
Why Join
- Lead interconnection strategy for a significant portfolio of contracted utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Play a central role in delivering major Canadian clean-energy infrastructure.
- Help build an important internal technical capability while working directly with senior leadership.
- Influence project design, procurement, contracting, construction, energization, and commissioning.
