Our client, a growing property and casualty insurance managing general agent (MGA), is hiring a Commercial Property Insurance Product Development Lead to build and launch a commercial property insurance product. The company underwrites complex property risks in catastrophe-exposed markets and combines insurance expertise, risk modeling, and technology in its approach to underwriting.

This is a hands-on product development role. The person hired will take the initial commercial property product from concept through implementation, and help refine and expand it over time. The role calls for someone who can work independently, make practical decisions about coverages and underwriting, and coordinate the many pieces needed to bring a commercial insurance product to market. It is initially an individual contributor position, with the potential to build a team as the business grows.

What you will do

  • Own the development and execution of the commercial property product roadmap, including the initial product launch, subsequent enhancements, and potential expansion into additional states.
  • Develop product architecture and translate market needs into coverages, forms, endorsements, underwriting guidelines, rates, rules, eligibility criteria, and specifications for implementation.
  • Evaluate property exposures, customer and distribution partner needs, competitor offerings, and market conditions to identify opportunities and inform product decisions.
  • Build business cases and recommend product, coverage, underwriting, and pricing approaches that support profitable growth and a strong customer and distribution partner experience.
  • Work across underwriting, actuarial, data, claims, technology, operations, legal, compliance, sales, and marketing to move the product through design, approval, implementation, launch, and ongoing improvement.
  • Use product and underwriting data to assess performance, identify issues, and recommend changes. Partner with actuarial and data specialists on more advanced analysis.
  • Help establish the commercial property expertise, processes, and documentation needed to support the product as the business scales.

Required qualifications

  • At least 5 years of commercial property and casualty (P&C) insurance experience, including substantive work with commercial property insurance and building or other real property risks.
  • At least 3 years in commercial property product management, product development, underwriting, or a closely related role.
  • Hands-on experience developing or materially enhancing commercial property insurance products, including work with coverage forms or endorsements, underwriting guidelines, and rates or rules. You can take a product from concept toward implementation rather than only manage an established portfolio.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate product decisions with underwriting, actuarial, technology, compliance, and other partners. You can use commercial insurance and underwriting data to inform business decisions.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with excess and surplus (E&S) lines. Admitted commercial property experience is also relevant.
  • Experience launching a new product or working in an MGA, carrier, or growing insurance organization where you had substantial hands-on ownership.
