Summary
The Food Bank Council of Michigan (FBCM) is the Partner State Association (PSA) of the seven Feeding America food banks serving all of Michigan, including Gleaners Community Food Bank, Forgotten Harvest, Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Feeding America West Michigan, Greater Lansing Food Bank, South Michigan Food Bank, and Food Gatherers.
FBCM coordinates federal and state public policy engagement, administers federal and state food programs, advocates for Michigan families, and fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration among the food banks.
FBCM is seeking a President & Chief Executive Officer to advance its mission through strategic leadership, operational oversight, and external influence. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO serves as the primary link between the Board and the organization, ensuring FBCM effectively supports Michigan's unified food bank network while engaging public, private, and nonprofit partners to strengthen systems that reduce food insecurity. The CEO leads at both the organizational and systems level, aligning advocacy, resource management, and collaboration to advance a food-secure Michigan.
Essential Duties + Responsibilities
Communication
- Keeps the Board informed and up to date on significant organizational, financial, policy, and strategic issues.
- Provides timely and accurate information to support effective governance and decision-making.
- Communicates clearly about risks, opportunities, and emerging trends affecting food security in Michigan.
- Serves as a credible and effective spokesperson for FBCM with policymakers, partners, funders, and the public.
- Promotes open and effective communication across staff and the food bank network.
Relationships
- Builds effective working relationships with state departments, elected officials, and public agencies.
- Strengthens collaboration among Michigan's unified food bank network.
- Develops partnerships with nonprofit associations, philanthropy, healthcare systems, agriculture, and the private sector.
- Represents FBCM in statewide and national forums to advance shared food security goals.
- Positions FBCM as a trusted convener and partner in addressing food insecurity.
Finances and Funding
- Demonstrates a clear understanding of FBCM's finances, funding sources, and fiscal responsibilities.
- Works with staff and the Board to develop, manage, and monitor the annual budget and long-range financial plans.
- Seeks and secures diverse and sustainable funding aligned with FBCM's mission.
- Regularly apprises the Board of the organization's financial condition, risks, and opportunities.
- Ensures appropriate financial controls, compliance, and accountability.
Management Leadership
- Leads, supports, and evaluates senior staff to ensure organizational effectiveness.
- Fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and respect consistent with FBCM's values.
- Oversees personnel management, performance evaluation, and professional development.
- Addresses conflicts constructively and minimizes organizational risk related to personnel matters.
- Ensures compliance with applicable employment laws and best practices.
Policies and Procedures
- Oversees the development, implementation, and review of organizational policies and procedures.
- Ensures policies reflect sound management practices and legal requirements.
- Promotes ethical conduct, transparency, and integrity throughout the organization.
- Aligns operational practices with Board-approved policies and strategic priorities.
- Ensures appropriate risk management and internal controls.
Strategic Direction
- Partners with the Board to develop, implement, and monitor strategic and long-range plans.
- Ensures that advocacy, resource management, and collaboration efforts align with strategic priorities.
- Anticipates emerging policy, funding, and system-level trends affecting food security.
- Translates strategy into measurable outcomes and organizational alignment.
- Maintains focus on dignified access to proper nutrition as the guiding outcome of FBCM's work.
Qualifications, Characteristics + Requirements
- Michigan resident with 7+ years of nonprofit management and leadership experience.
- Graduate degree in a related field preferred.
- Experienced in long-range planning and visioning, organizational development, and staff supervision.
- Visionary and creative leader, yet detail-oriented and decisive.
- Ability to meet deadlines and motivate others to do so in a highly collaborative environment.
- A critical thinker with reasoning skills suitable to execute all assigned tasks and responsibilities, even amid frequent distractions and multiple priorities.
- Strong financial and organizational management experience.
- A history of strong collaboration; actively seeks strategic partnerships.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills; superb oral and written communication skills; able to listen and present ideas clearly and persuasively.
- Exhibits the qualities of a “servant leader” — listens first, seeks to understand, and keeps the best interests of FBCM's members, the community, the organization, and mission in mind.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment with standard office equipment; occasional work in a warehouse-type environment.
- Travel up to 25% of the time, with occasional overnight stays.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
