Rainier Recruiting is partnering with a large marine organization that is seeking an experienced Controller to lead the daily operations of a full-cycle accounting team. This role reports to the CFO and is responsible for accurate financial reporting, the development and enforcement of accounting principles, and adherence to compliance standards. The ideal candidate will supervise a small team and manage all aspects of financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, audits, budgeting, and forecasting. Compensation & Benefits:

  • Annual salary $125,000 plus $25,000 in achievable bonuses (negotiable).

Location: Everett, WA or Whidbey Island, WA. This position is onsite 3-4 days a week and work from home 1-2 days a week.


Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee daily accounting activities including:
  • Month-end and year-end closings
  • Accounts payable and receivable
  • General ledger maintenance, including exception analysis
  • Payroll, utilities, and check runs
  • Cash receipts and bank reconciliations
  • Fixed asset and capital asset tracking
  • Revenue recognition and expense variance analysis
  • Debt and long-term lease tracking

Leadership and Supervision

  • Direct and support a small accounting team to ensure high performance
  • Allocate responsibilities and monitor workload distribution
  • Conduct performance evaluations and offer ongoing coaching and development
  • Address employee relations issues including attendance, performance, and interpersonal conflicts
  • Promote a culture of safety, inclusion, and compliance with HR policies

Financial Management

  • Develop and maintain strong internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory standards
  • Conduct monthly financial reporting and exception analysis on general ledger activity
  • Lead quarterly and year-end audits, including financial and 401(k) audits
  • Oversee certified payroll processing and ensure proper documentation is maintained
  • Manage tax-related communications with state and federal agencies

Strategic and Operational Support

  • Participate in budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Communicate financial performance and strategic initiatives to executive leadership
  • Identify financial trends and implement corrective actions when necessary
  • Provide financial insights to support business decisions
  • Contribute to the implementation and improvement of ERP and accounting systems
  • Maintain SOX compliance and prevent financial discrepancies or fraud


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited institution
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in both public accounting and a private sector manufacturing or construction environment
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and internal control procedures
  • Exceptional organizational, leadership, and communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Outlook
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to lead teams and collaborate across departments

Preferred:

  • CPA certification or Master’s degree in Accounting
  • Prior experience at a Big 4 public accounting firm
  • Expertise in cost accounting, job cost tracking, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Access and familiarity with Sage X3
  • Experience with financial system upgrades or ERP implementations
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development through continued education


Additional Information

This is a full-time role based in Washington State and may involve travel between operational facilities. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and able to pass a background check.
