Join the Board of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education

This is a pivotal moment to join the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIA) as a Non-Executive Director and Trustee. The OIA exists to uphold fairness for students, giving them a voice by providing an independent route to review complaints once internal processes have been exhausted. Our work requires careful judgement, independence and a deep commitment to public confidence in a system that can feel complex at the moment it matters most. As the higher education sector faces increasing scrutiny, shifting expectations and expanding responsibilities, including into Wales and further education, the Board plays a vital role in ensuring the OIA remains effective, accessible and trusted by the students and providers it serves.

We are now seeking two new Non-Executive Directors to join a dynamic and engaged Board that balances assurance with forward-looking strategy. We are particularly interested in individuals motivated by public purpose who bring senior-level experience from public-facing or regulated environments. One role will suit a qualified solicitor with experience in sectors that serve people and communities, and who understands the responsibility of supporting individuals who rely on independent review and redress. This Director will chair the Audit and Risk Committee and contribute legal insight and governance rigour at Board level. The second role will suit an individual with strong digital and technology-enabled transformation experience, able to support the organisation as it grows and evolves, ensuring technology, data and digital engagement are used effectively to improve accessibility, service delivery and connection with students.

We welcome applications from candidates across public, private and voluntary sectors who share our commitment to fairness, independence and inclusion. We are not seeking additional higher education sector experience for these roles; instead, we are looking for complementary perspectives that will strengthen the Board’s collective capability and help us navigate change with confidence. Above all, we are looking for thoughtful, collaborative Non-Executive Directors who care about the people we serve and who will contribute to a professional, forward-looking Board culture as the OIA continues to evolve.
