About Us
The Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) is the independent regulator for nurses, midwives and nursing associates across the UK. We work to protect the public and support professionals to deliver safe, effective care by setting standards for education and practice, maintaining the register, and taking action when concerns are raised.
The opportunity
We are seeking a Deputy Director, Professional Regulation to provide senior corporate, legal and operational leadership across our Fitness to Practise casework functions. Reporting to the Executive Director of Professional Regulation, with a professional link to the General Counsel as Head of Legal Profession, this is a pivotal leadership role at the heart of public protection.
The impact you will have
You will shape how Fitness to Practise is delivered from start to finish, ensuring decisions are fair, proportionate, evidence led and legally robust. You will drive quality and timeliness, embed strong governance and assurance, and lead continuous improvement and modernisation so our processes support consistent, risk-based decision making and the right outcomes at the earliest opportunity. You will also play a key role in strengthening alignment of legal standards and supporting a culture of learning, trust and compassion.
What we are looking for
You will be a legally qualified professional (for example, a solicitor or barrister) with a current practising certificate and substantial senior leadership experience in a complex regulatory or Fitness to Practise environment. Comfortable advising on high-risk casework, you will lead multi-disciplinary teams with effectiveness, remaining outcome-focused, using insight and evidence to learn, improve, and strengthen operational performance. You will commission and oversee internal and external legal services to ensure quality, efficiency and value for money, acting with integrity in sound, transparent decision-making. You will also foster respect by creating a positive, empowering culture in which people feel supported to do their best work, alongside a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion and the confidence to engage credibly with senior stakeholders across the UK.
