BookTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity. Each year we reach over 1.4 million children and families across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, delivering evidence-informed programmes that make a measurable difference to children’s reading behaviours.
Our work is rooted in the belief that every child deserves the chance to enjoy reading and all the lifelong benefits it brings. Children who read regularly are happier and healthier, they form stronger bonds, they are more creative and enjoy more success in life.
This is a fantastic time to join BookTrust. In 2025, we launched our five-year strategy, Reading for a Brighter Future, setting ambitious goals to transform children’s reading experiences. With a renewed focus on schools and children from vulnerable backgrounds, in addition to our flagship Bookstart programme for families in the early years, we are expanding our reach and deepening our impact.
The Head of Programme for Children from Vulnerable Backgrounds will lead our growth in this critical area, reviewing and transforming our internal operating model and the way we work with delivery partners, and leading our programme of work across the organisation to reach ambitious new targets for supporting children from vulnerable backgrounds. This role offers the chance to shape strategy, drive collaboration, and lead change at a national scale.
We seek a collaborative leader with experience of delivery in a public sector or purpose-led organisation, and across a complex system. We need an individual with experience of developing effective programmes to deliver impact-led outcomes and experience of change and transformation, able to deliver outcomes through partnership with other organisations.
At BookTrust, we believe the power of reading can unlock brighter futures and help children overcome disadvantage. We are united by our commitment to making a real difference, supported by a talented and multidisciplinary team. If you are passionate about creating transformative change, comfortable with innovation and systemic thinking, and ready to lead in a collaborative, purpose-driven organisation, this is the moment to join us.
