Since its foundation in 1909, the ICR has pioneered some of the most important discoveries in cancer research. From providing the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, to laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease, to being the first researchers in Europe to develop chemotherapy agents for cancer; the ICR has been at the forefront of science in the cancer space for over 100 years.

Today, the ICR is the second-ranked academic research centre in the UK, the first for biological sciences, and the third-ranked UK higher education institution for the impact of their research on society – thanks to their strategy of combining world-class basic cancer research with a determination to take discoveries to patients. The ICR works in close partnership with the world-leading Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust to conduct early- and late-phase clinical trials, and their joint Drug Development Unit, which sees around 300 patients per year, is one of the largest centres for phase I trials in the world and makes an important contribution to the worldwide effort to discover and develop new cancer drugs.

As the enter a new stage of their evolution, the ICR is seeking a Trustee with the background and experience to advise them on policy and public affairs matters.

As a specialist Higher Education institution which makes an important contribution to the UK science base, as well as global scientific research which is heavily dependent on income from public and charitable funds, the ICR needs to engage proactively with the development of research and innovation policy and cultivate strong networks with governments, policy makers and officials in the UK, EU and US as well as the wider global context.

The ICR are committed to providing equal opportunities for everyone. They acknowledge that people from certain backgrounds are under-represented within the third sector and are committed to doing what they can to correct this. They are particularly keen to receive applications from people of colour and those from ethnically minoritised backgrounds, disabled and neurodivergent people, people who identify as LGBTQIA, and people who identify as working class or from a lower socioeconomic background (now or in the past).
