The National Archives
Audit and Risk Committee – Independent Member
The National Archives is a non-ministerial department, and the official archive and publisher for the UK Government, and for England and Wales. We work to bring together and secure the public record, both digital and physical, for future generations and are guardians of over 1,000 years of iconic national documents. We are expert advisers in information and records management, and a cultural, academic and heritage institution.
The Audit and Risk Committee is a crucial mechanism for supporting The National Archives’ Board and the Principal Accounting Officer, in their role of ensuring that there are effective processes in place for governance, internal control and risk management.
As an Independent Member of the Audit and Risk Committee, you will provide insight and strong, constructive scrutiny and challenge regarding The National Archives’ risks, including those arising from increasing resource constraints, new service delivery models, information flows on risk and control, and the agility of the organisation to respond to emerging risks.
We are seeking an experienced and strategic financial leader to join the Audit and Risk Committee as an Independent Member. You will bring recent, board- or committee-level financial experience from the public or private sector (ideally both), supported by a recognised professional accountancy qualification (e.g. CCAB) or equivalent senior financial leadership expertise. With a strong understanding of accounting, audit, and risk management, you will be confident contributing independent judgement, constructive challenge, and informed oversight in a complex organisational environment.
You will demonstrate a clear alignment with The National Archives’ mission and the ability to quickly grasp its strategic priorities, risks, and operating context, including government relationships and the wider archive sector. A sound understanding of relevant legislation (including the Public Records Act, Freedom of Information Act, and UK GDPR) and the government accounting and assurance landscape is essential. Experience of working with audit and risk committees in large or complex organisations is highly desirable, alongside knowledge of public sector reporting and audit expectations.
Time commitment
The time commitment will be approximately 9 days per annum (to include meetings and preparation time).
Remuneration
Earnings are expected to be a minimum of £3,600 per annum based on the commitments articulated above.
